The woman's ordinary case is measured in days, seven of them, and closes without an offering. Leviticus 12:2 measures the uncleanness of childbirth by these same days, so the earlier chapter assumes the reader knows this rule.

Verse 20 applies the man's rule of verse 4 to the woman's bed and seat. John Gill notes that during her separation she could still live with her husband and serve him in every office except sharing his bed.
