6 notes on this verseA month old - The male child, five shekels, 15s., the female, three shekels, 9s. Being both in comparative infancy, they were nearly of an equal value. None were vowed under a month old: the first-born being always considered as the Lord’s property, could not be vowed, see Lev 27:26.

This chapter prices vows, the one act in Leviticus no one is commanded to perform. Deuteronomy 23:22 leaves a man free to refrain. The figures run by age and sex from fifty shekels down to three.

Adam Clarke notes that nobody was vowed under a month old, the firstborn being already the LORD's. At this age the two values stand close together. Matthew Henry notes that Samuel was vowed as a child and never redeemed, being a Levite, and served at the tabernacle from his childhood.
