And Hazargaddah,.... The first of these, it is probable, is the same, Jerom (g) calls Gadda, in the tribe of Judah, which was in his day a village in the extreme borders of Daroma to the east, hanging over the dead sea: and Heshmon is met with nowhere else: and Bethpalet is in Neh 11:26, where it is called Bethphelet. (g) Ut supra, (De loc. Heb.) fol. 92. B.

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah

on Joshua 15:20-32

The cities are grouped by region rather than listed at random, and this run covers the dry south toward Edom. A list like this is a legal record of title, which is why later books can argue from it, and why a town's tribe can be settled by looking it up. Beersheba stands in the middle of it at verse 28, already old by Genesis 21:31.
