The three baskets are three days
on Genesis 40:18-19
Joseph gives the true reading when the true reading is a death sentence: Pharaoh will lift off the head this time, and the body goes on a tree for the birds. Clarke notes that Egyptian practice beheaded the man first and hung the body after, so the two halves belong to one sentence. The same phrase that restored the cupbearer condemns the baker.

And Joseph answered and said,.... Immediately, directly, without any further thought and meditation, being divinely instructed: this is the interpretation thereof; of the above dream: the three baskets are three days; signify three days.
Thus hypocrites, when they hear good things promised to good Christians, would put in for a share, though they have no part nor lot in the matter. It was not Joseph's fault that he brought him no better tidings. Ministers are but interpreters, they cannot make the thing otherwise than it is; if therefore they deal faithfully, and their message prove unpleasing, it is not their fault.
