7 notes on this verseNow when Solomon had made an end of praying,.... The prayer recorded in the preceding chapter: the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; which was the token God gave of his acceptance of them, of which there had been several instances before, Lev 9:24, 1Ki 18:38, and the glory of the Lord filled the house; the glory of the Shechinah of the Lord, as the Targum, see 1Ki 8:11.

the fire came down from heaven
on 2 Chronicles 7:1-2
Fire falling to consume the offering is a mark this Chronicles account adds where Kings is silent, joining the fire that fell on the tabernacle in Lev 9:24, on Elijah's altar in 1 Ki 18:38, and on David's altar at the threshingfloor in 1 Chr 21:26. The glory that filled the house at the ark's entry in 5:13-14 returns and holds, and this time the priests cannot go back in to minister. Barnes notes the fact is missing from the parallel in Kings and calls the omission no contradiction; Gill reads the fire as the same token of acceptance given at the tabernacle and at Carmel.

38 ); and, in general, to accept the burnt-sacrifice is, in the Hebrew phrase, to turn it to ashes, Ps. xx. The fire came down here, not upon the killing of the sacrifices, but the praying of the prayer. This fire intimated that God was, (1.) Glorious in himself; for our God is a consuming fire, terrible even in his holy places.

As a farther token that God accepted Solomon's prayer, the glory of the Lord filled the house; the heart that is filled with an holy awe and reverence of the divine glory, to which God manifests his greatness, and (which is no less his glory) his goodness, is thereby owned as a living temple.

The fire came down from heaven - As in the time of Moses on the dedication of the tabernacle Lev 9:24 The fact is omitted from the narrative of Kings; but omission is not contradiction.

the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering--Every act of worship was accompanied by a sacrifice. The preternatural stream of fire kindled the mass of flesh, and was a token of the divine acceptance of Solomon's prayer (see on Le 9:24;

The fire came down - The cloud had come down before, now the fire consumes the sacrifice, showing that both the house and the sacrifices were accepted by the Lord.
