4 notes on this verseThey kept the feast of the dedication of the altar seven days, from the second to the ninth; the tenth day was the day of atonement, when they were to afflict their souls for sin, and that was not unseasonable in the midst of their rejoicings; on the fifteenth day began the feast of tabernacles, which continued to the twenty-second, and they did not separate till the twenty-third.

The count is vast, “22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep,” more than the bronze altar could hold. So verse 7 consecrates the middle of the courtyard for more offerings. The Levites play “the musical instruments of the LORD, which King David had made,” the order Chronicles traces to 1 Chronicles 25.

Henry dates the service. The dedication of the altar ran from the second day of the seventh month to the ninth, and the tenth was the Day of Atonement. Henry calls a day of mourning for sin fitting even in the middle of such rejoicing.
