A prophet named Oded meets the returning army before it reaches Samaria, the Chronicles-only prophet confrontation this thread has carried since Shemaiah in chapter 11. He names the victory itself as sin, a rage that reaches up to heaven, and turns the argument on the victors: are there not with you, even with you, sins against the Lord your God. Spurgeon preached this verse as a rebuke to any nation quick to judge another's sin while carrying its own, and Oded's demand is blunt, deliver the captives again, before the fierce wrath of the Lord falls a second time.

He protested earnestly against adding this great offense of unnatural and sinful cruelty (Le 25:43, 44; Mic 2:8, 9) to the already overwhelming amount of their own national sins. Such was the effect of his spirited remonstrance and the opposing tide of popular feeling, that "the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation."
