The regnal summary: twenty-five years, walking in the way of Asa, doing right in the sight of the LORD. The Howbeit at verse 33, the high places were not taken away, stands beside 17:6, which says he took them away, and the readings hold both: the royal reform removed them and popular use rebuilt them, for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts, the verse's own explanation. The rest of the acts are in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, one of the named sources the Chronicler worked from and openly cites.

This was the general character of his reign, that he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, kept close to the worship of God himself and did what he could to keep his people close to it. But two things are here to be lamented:-- 1.

Who is mentioned ... - Words which are now generally thought to mean “whose work was inserted into the Book of the Kings.” Of Israel - “Israel” is probably used here inexactly for “Judah” (compare 2Ch 12:6; 2Ch 21:2, 2Ch 21:4).
