David was thirty years old when he became king

on 2 Samuel 5:4-5

David is thirty when he begins to reign. Luke 3:23 gives the same age for Jesus at the start of His ministry, a parallel John Gill and Matthew Henry note. Verse 5 divides the forty years into seven years and six months over Judah and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem enters the reign here as the seat of thirty-three years. Matthew Henry judges it likely to be Salem where Melchizedek was king, citing Psalm 76:2, where Salem stands beside Zion as the dwelling of God. The city of that priest-king becomes the city of David.
