Revelation 9:1-2

A star fallen from heaven to earth is given the key of the bottomless pit, the abyss, abussos, the same holding place named at Luke 8:31 and later Revelation 20:1-3 for the dragon himself, and the falling star is read by the main line as a real angelic being, most take it as an evil one given permission rather than power of his own, exercising a delegated authority rather than acting outside God's sovereign allowance. When the pit opens, smoke rises like the smoke of a great furnace, thick enough to darken the sun and the air, and the scene deliberately echoes Genesis 19's smoke over Sodom and Joel 2's darkened sun as the day of the Lord approaches.

Revelation 9:3-4

Locusts come out of the smoke with power like earthly scorpions, and the text at once puts a leash on them, they are commanded not to touch the grass, any green thing, or any tree, an exact reversal of every ordinary locust plague, which strips vegetation bare, so the reader knows immediately these are not natural insects but instruments carrying a specific, targeted commission. Their sole permitted targets are men who do not have the seal of God in their foreheads, the same seal placed on the 144,000 in chapter 7, so the judgment passes over the sealed and falls only on the unsealed, a mercy built into the wrath.

Revelation 9:5-6

The torment is bounded at five months, likely the natural lifespan of a locust swarm in that region, and it is limited to pain rather than death, tormented as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a man, a sting rather than a kill. The chapter's most chilling line follows: in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it, and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them, a judgment so severe that the mercy of dying is itself withheld, the ordinary escape of the grave closed to those under this particular wrath.

Revelation 9:7-9

John reaches for eight comparisons in three verses trying to describe what he saw, shapes like horses prepared for battle, something like crowns of gold, faces like men, hair like women, teeth like lions, breastplates like iron, and wings whose sound was like many chariots and horses running to battle, the repeated as it were and like unto marking a vision straining human language rather than a code awaiting decryption. The composite picture, human intelligence and cruelty riding on beastlike power and speed, armored and swift, has struck commentators across the centuries as describing something genuinely monstrous rather than any known creature, natural or engineered.

Revelation 9:10-11

The locusts carry stings like scorpions in their tails, their power to hurt men bounded again at five months, and they answer to a king, the angel of the bottomless pit, given his name in both tongues so no reader misses it, Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek, both meaning Destroyer. That this host has a king at all marks it as organized rather than chaotic, an army under real command rather than a swarm, and the site's posture toward the spirit world receives the description at face value, a real ruler over real spirits released for a real season of judgment.

Revelation 9:12-14

One woe is past, John notes, closing the fifth trumpet's account and reminding the reader of the eagle's cry at 8:13 that three woes remain, two more still to come; the fifth and sixth trumpets are the first two of those three, and the seventh trumpet's woe will not fall until chapter 11. The sixth angel sounds, and a voice comes from the four horns of the golden altar, the same altar of 8:3-5 that carried the saints' prayers, commanding the release of four angels bound at the great river Euphrates, beings held in restraint until this appointed moment rather than free agents until now.

Revelation 9:15-16

The four angels were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, a precise appointed span read by the main line as marking the exact duration God has fixed for this judgment, sovereignty measured to the hour even in wrath, for to slay the third part of men. The army that follows is staggering, two hundred thousand thousand, two hundred million, a number John says he simply heard rather than counted, and the site's futurist reading takes the figure as literal rather than symbolic, a host beyond any army of the ancient world and matched to no power then existing.

Revelation 9:17-19

The horsemen's breastplates are fire, jacinth, and brimstone, the same three colors, red, dark blue, and sulfur-yellow, as the fire, smoke, and brimstone that issue from the horses' own mouths, the killing power united in color and substance across rider and mount alike. A third of mankind is killed by these three plagues together, and the power lies not only in the mouths but in the tails, described as serpents with heads that do hurt, a doubled weapon front and back that marks this cavalry, like the locusts before it, as no natural army but a supernatural instrument of judgment.

Revelation 9:20-21

The chapter's real tragedy is stated last: the rest of the men not killed by these plagues still repented not, the fourth mention in this chapter alone of judgment falling on the unrepentant and unsealed, and the sin named first is worship, devils and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood that can neither see, hear, nor walk, Isaiah's and the Psalter's old mockery of idolatry brought forward unchanged. Four further sins are listed without repentance, murders, sorceries, pharmakeia, the Greek word behind pharmacy and reaching further than potion-making into occult drug use, fornication, and thefts, and the list stands as the Bible's own diagnosis that hardened hearts under visible, undeniable judgment still do not turn.
