Revelation 12:1-2

A woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head appears as a great wonder in heaven, travailing in birth and in pain to be delivered. The site's reading follows Joseph's own dream in Genesis 37:9, where the sun, moon, and eleven stars pictured Jacob, Rachel, and the twelve sons of Israel, and takes the woman as Israel, the nation through whom the Messiah was born into the world. Other readers take her as the church bringing forth Christ corporately, or as Mary the mother of Jesus in a narrower reading, and both positions have long histories among careful interpreters. Her birth pains recall Isaiah 66:7-8's picture of a nation born in a day, the travail of a people bringing forth their own deliverance.

Revelation 12:3-4

Another wonder appears, a great red dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads, later named outright as that old serpent, the Devil and Satan, in verse 9. His tail draws a third part of the stars of heaven and casts them to the earth, read by most as the angels who fell with him at his first rebellion, and he stands before the woman ready to devour her child the moment it is born. The seven heads and ten horns match the beast of chapter 13 and of Daniel 7, the dragon giving his own shape to the powers he raises against the woman's seed. The scene stages Genesis 3:15's war between the serpent and the woman's seed at the moment of its climax, Satan positioned to destroy the Messiah at his birth exactly as Herod attempted in Matthew 2:16.

Revelation 12:5

The woman brings forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron, Psalm 2:9's own words applied to Jesus as they are again in 19:15, and her child is caught up unto God, and to his throne, the instant the dragon meant to destroy him. The verse compresses the Lord's entire earthly life, birth, ministry, and ascension, into a single sentence, moving directly from the manger to the throne without pausing on the cross the dragon in fact accomplished at Calvary. The dragon's apparent victory at the cross became his defeat, since the very death he sought was the means by which the child was caught up to reign. The rapture of the man child to God's throne previews the church's own hope, caught up as he was caught up, in the pattern Paul draws in 1 Thessalonians 4:17.

Revelation 12:6

the woman fled into the wilderness: The woman flees into the wilderness, to a place prepared of God, where she is fed for a thousand two hundred and threescore days, the same 1,260 days as the two witnesses' ministry in 11:3, one clock running through the whole book's middle section. The wilderness recalls Israel's forty years under God's daily provision after the exodus, the same pattern of preserved and fed exile applied again to the woman of this chapter. Verse 14 returns to this flight and adds the detail of the eagle's wings, the two verses forming one continuous scene interrupted by the war in heaven. A place prepared of God stands against Pharaoh's wilderness of testing, this time a wilderness of divine shelter from the dragon's pursuit.

Revelation 12:7-9

Michael and his angels fought against the dragon: War breaks out in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon and his angels, and the dragon does not prevail; his place is found in heaven no more. The great dragon is cast out, identified now by four names at once, that old serpent, the Devil, and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world, and he is cast down to the earth with his angels cast out alongside him. The unseen world is real and active throughout this scene: an archangel commands armies, a third of the angelic host followed the dragon in his fall, and the outcome of a battle fought entirely out of human sight determines what happens next on earth. Michael's role here answers Daniel 12:1, where he stands up for Israel in the time of trouble, the same prince fighting the same enemy in the same book's own pattern.

Revelation 12:10

A loud voice in heaven announces that salvation, strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ have now come, because the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accused them before our God day and night. The dragon's expulsion from heaven ends an ongoing courtroom accusation, the same office Satan holds against Job in Job 1:9-11 and against Joshua the high priest in Zechariah 3:1, now silenced for good. The saints' standing no longer depends on answering an accuser who has been thrown out of the court, their case settled by the blood named in the very next verse. Heaven celebrates an event that has not yet reached earth, since verse 12 immediately warns that the dragon's wrath is only beginning below.

Revelation 12:11

The brethren overcome the accuser by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives unto the death, three grounds of victory named in order: the finished work of the cross, the believer's own spoken witness to it, and a willingness to die rather than deny it. This is the book's own warfare manual, the continuationist strength of the whole vision distilled into one sentence naming testimony as a weapon alongside the blood, no lesser power available to the church than what defeated the dragon himself. The order matters: the blood does the overcoming, and testimony and steadfastness are its fruit rather than a second, independent cause. Martyrdom is present in the verse but is not required by it, since loved not their lives unto the death describes a settled readiness rather than an outcome guaranteed to every believer.

Revelation 12:12

Heaven is called to rejoice at the dragon's fall, but earth and sea receive a woe instead, because the devil has come down to them in great wrath, knowing that he hath but a short time. The dragon's fury is measured by a clock he can read even if he cannot stop it, and his rage against the earth in this chapter's second half is the direct fruit of his defeat in the first. The verse marks the turn of the whole chapter, from the war fought and won in heaven to the war the dragon now wages on earth against the woman and, in verse 17, her remaining seed. A short time governs everything that follows through chapter 19, the dragon's fury intensifying precisely because his time is running out rather than open-ended.

Revelation 12:13

Seeing himself cast down to the earth, the dragon turns to persecute the woman who had brought forth the man child, unable to reach the child who is already caught up to God's throne and so venting his fury on the mother instead. The verse resumes the flight begun in verse 6, the two verses framing the war in heaven as an interruption within one continuous scene of pursuit and escape. The dragon's persecution of Israel across the church age, on the site's reading, is the earthly outworking of a war he already lost out of human sight, a defeated enemy still doing all the damage a short time allows. His inability to reach the child turns his violence toward the child's mother, a pattern Herod's own slaughter of the innocents in Matthew 2:16 already showed on a smaller scale.

Revelation 12:14

given two wings of a great eagle: The woman is given two wings of a great eagle to fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent, the same 1,260-day period of verse 6 now named by the fraction the book borrows from Daniel 7:25 and 12:7. The eagle's wings recall Exodus 19:4's I bare you on eagles' wings, the same image once used of Israel's deliverance from Egypt applied again to a future deliverance from the dragon. Time, times, and half a time totals three and a half years, the same half week Daniel 9:27 marks as the tribulation's second half, one more clock among several the book runs on the identical span. Her place, prepared and now reached by flight, answers the place prepared of God already named in verse 6, the outcome of a rescue only implied there now made explicit.

Revelation 12:15-16

The serpent casts water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, meaning to sweep her away in the current, and the earth itself helps her, opening its mouth to swallow the flood the dragon had cast out. Readers differ on the flood's meaning, some taking it as literal catastrophe, others as a flood of persecution, false accusation, or deceptive propaganda sent to overwhelm her, the serpent's mouth recalling the lying mouth of Genesis 3. The earth's rescue of the woman is unusual in Revelation, where earth more often groans under judgment than acts as an ally, and stands as one of the book's plainer instances of providence working through the created order itself. The image answers the Red Sea and Jordan crossings, waters that once threatened Israel becoming instead the means of her deliverance.

Revelation 12:17

Furious at his failure, the dragon turns to make war with the remnant of her seed, those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ, a description of faithful believers used again almost word for word in 14:12. Unable to destroy the woman herself, the dragon shifts his war to her offspring individually, the same shift from corporate to personal persecution the book traces through chapters 13 and 14. The remnant's double mark, obedience to God's commandments and the testimony of Jesus, names the same two grounds of victory already given in verse 11, now the target rather than the weapon. The chapter that opened with a woman clothed with the sun closes with her children under open assault, setting the stage for the two beasts who carry out the dragon's war in the chapter that follows.
