Matthew 28:1

The end of the Sabbath dates the visit to Saturday night moving into Sunday, the third day counted inclusively from the Friday burial by the same Jewish reckoning that let part of a day stand for the whole. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, the same two named sitting over against the sepulchre at 27:61, return now with the earliest possible legal opportunity, since Sabbath travel restrictions have just lifted. Mark and Luke add spices they had prepared to anoint a body they still expect to find, women coming to perform a last service for the dead rather than to witness the one event none of them yet believe is coming.

Matthew 28:2-4

The great earthquake and the angel's descent are Matthew's own record of the resurrection's outward sign, though the text is careful that the stone is rolled back for the women's benefit and the guards', not to let Jesus out, since the risen body already passes through grave clothes and later through locked doors. The angel's countenance like lightning and raiment white as snow echoes the same glory language Matthew used of the transfigured Christ at 17:2, the messenger clothed in a measure of the glory his message now announces. The keepers, hardened Roman or temple soldiers under a sealed and guarded stone, become as dead men before a single unarmed messenger, the chapter's first and starkest contrast between fear that paralyzes and fear that sends running with joy.

Matthew 28:5-7

The angel's first word to the women is the Gospel's own reflex whenever heaven addresses frightened mortals, fear not, and his reason for it is exact: I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified, naming the very man by the very method that should have ended the search. He is not here, for he is risen, as he said answers Jesus' own repeated predictions at 16:21, 17:23 and 20:19, so the angel does not announce a new fact so much as confirm one the disciples had already been told and had not believed. The command to go quickly and tell, and the specific promise that he goeth before you into Galilee, ties directly to 26:32's word spoken the same night of the betrayal, the risen Christ keeping an appointment he made before he died.

Matthew 28:8

The women's fear and great joy together, rather than one displacing the other, is the truest human reaction the chapter records to an event too large for a single emotion to hold. They run rather than walk, obedient to the angel's own go quickly, and Luke 24:11 will record that the eleven at first regard their report as idle tales, the first resurrection witnesses meeting the same unbelief their message will spend the rest of church history overturning. Their obedience is immediate and their errand is the oldest apostolic commission in the book, women sent to tell men what men were not present to see for themselves.

Matthew 28:9-10

Jesus meets the women himself before he meets any of the eleven, and his greeting, All hail, the ordinary Greek chairete, a familiar word made new by who now speaks it, receives an answer that is already worship rather than mere greeting in return, they held him by the feet, a real and physical body available to real and physical touch. His own words repeat the angel's exactly, be not afraid, go tell, but he adds my brethren, the first time in the Gospel he calls the disciples by that name, the shame of Gethsemane's desertion already forgiven before it could even be confessed. The worship thread that opened the book with the magi at 2:2 now closes its central movement with the women at the empty tomb, both scenes Gentiles or outsiders to official Israel recognizing what Jerusalem's own leaders refused to see.

Matthew 28:11-15

Some of the same guards who had fallen as dead men now report everything honestly to the chief priests, who respond not with faith but with a payment large enough, Matthew's own word for it, to buy silence and a story neither party actually believes. The bribed account, his disciples came by night and stole him away while we slept, convicts itself on its own terms, since sleeping soldiers could not have witnessed what happened while they slept, a self-defeating rumor the bench notes Justin Martyr already had to answer in the second century as still current among critics of the church. The chief priests' promise to secure the guards from Pilate's own discipline shows the cover story required collusion at every level Rome could reach, and Matthew records that this saying is commonly reported until this day, meaning still current decades later when he wrote.

Matthew 28:16-17

The eleven, Judas's place still unfilled, obey the risen Christ's own instruction relayed twice now, through the angel and through Jesus himself, and go to the mountain in Galilee, closing the book's mountain thread that opened at the temptation and ran through the Sermon, the feeding, and the transfiguration to this final appointed height. When they see him they worship, using the same word the magi used at 2:2 and the women used two scenes earlier, yet Matthew adds the one honest note the whole Gospel refuses to hide, but some doubted, a doubt the text neither explains away nor lets slide into unbelief, since the very next verse has the doubters commissioned along with everyone else. The worship-and-doubt pairing is Matthew's own realism about faith meeting a resurrection body, wonder and hesitation present in the same room at once.

Matthew 28:18

All power, exousia, authority rather than mere strength, given unto me in heaven and in earth is the risen Christ's own claim to the very dominion Daniel 7:14 gave the son of man, all peoples, nations and languages should serve him, an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away. The claim answers the temptation scene's third offer at 4:8-9, where Satan showed him the kingdoms of the world and their glory on a mountain and asked for worship in exchange; here on another mountain the same authority is given freely by the Father rather than falsely offered by the enemy. Everything the Great Commission commands in the next two verses rests on this one sentence, since a command to disciple all nations makes sense only from a King whose authority already extends to all nations.

Matthew 28:19

Go ye therefore, teach, properly make disciples, matheteusate, of all nations answers the Gentiles-gathered-in thread the whole book has carried since the magi and the Canaanite woman, the mission now stated as universal where it had earlier been confined to the lost sheep of the house of Israel at 10:6. The baptismal formula names Father, Son and Holy Ghost under one singular name, onoma, not three, the earliest and plainest Trinitarian text in the New Testament, and the bench notes its early and unbroken use in the church's baptismal practice from the Didache forward as evidence against later theories that a shorter formula was somehow original. Baptizing and teaching stand together as the twin marks of a disciple the whole verse envisions, entry into the name and instruction in the commands that follow it.

Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded stops the Great Commission short of a bare recruitment drive, since the goal is obedience to the whole body of Christ's teaching, not merely a decision or a baptism, and the whole Gospel the reader has just finished becomes the curriculum this verse assumes. The closing promise, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world, answers 1:23's Emmanuel, God with us, across the entire book, the child whose name meant God with us now speaking the same presence as his own risen word, and the phrase even unto the end of the world names the very consummation the Olivet discourse looked toward at 24:14. Amen closes the whole Gospel on the note it opened with, the abiding nearness of the God who came to dwell among his people never withdrawn from them again.
