Jeremiah 19:1-3

Go and get a potter’s earthen bottle: The Lord sends Jeremiah to buy a potter's earthen bottle and to bring along elders of the people and elders of the priests, so the coming sign has official witnesses rather than a private word only Jeremiah heard. He is sent out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, by the entry of the east gate, and told to proclaim the message there to the kings of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem themselves. The warning that the hearer's ears shall tingle repeats the exact formula used of Eli's house at 1 Samuel 3:11 and of Manasseh's Jerusalem at 2 Kings 21:12, language the bench reads as marking news too severe to be softened.

Jeremiah 19:4-5

have forsaken me: The charge is forsaking the Lord and estranging his own place with incense burned to gods neither the people nor their fathers had known, filling the city besides with the blood of innocents. Verse 5 names the worst of it, sons burned as offerings on Baal's high places, a rite for which the Lord states flatly that he never commanded it, never spoke it, and it never came into his mind. Gill and Wesley read that triple denial as Scripture's own answer to any claim that child sacrifice descended from divine sanction, a horror entirely of Judah's own making.

Jeremiah 19:6-9

no more be called Tophet: Tophet's name is changed by the same sentence that condemns it, no longer the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of slaughter, judgment renaming the very ground where the burning took place. The counsel of Judah is made void, the sword and the corpses left as food for birds and beasts pick up language the covenant curses already used at Deuteronomy 28:26, and the city itself is turned into a hissing before every passer-by. The famine inside the coming siege drives parents to eat their own children, the same extremity Deuteronomy 28:53 warns of and Lamentations 4:10 later records as having happened, the curse's furthest point named here before it is reached.

Jeremiah 19:10-13

break the bottle in the sight of the men: The bottle is smashed in front of the witnesses as the sign's final act, and the word given with it, that cannot be made whole again, sets this chapter against chapter 18's wet clay on the wheel: soft clay can be reworked, but a fired vessel once broken stays broken, the same material shown at two different stages of Jeremiah's own preaching. The dead are to be buried in Tophet itself until there is no more room, and the houses of Jerusalem and of Judah's kings are declared defiled like Tophet because incense was burned on their very rooftops to the host of heaven. That astral worship on the housetops is the same practice the book returns to at 8:2 and again in Egypt at 44:17-25, a habit that outlasted every warning given against it.

Jeremiah 19:14-15

Then came Jeremiah from Tophet: Jeremiah returns from the valley to the court of the Lord's house, the most public space in the city, and repeats the sentence there before the people rather than leaving it spoken only over Tophet. The reason given is not new to the book, they hardened their necks that they might not hear my words, the same stiff-necked language Moses used of the wilderness generation and Jeremiah has already used at 7:26 and 17:23. The sign-act closes where the temple sermon of chapter 7 began, judgment announced in the very courts the people trusted to protect them.
