Isaiah 54:1-3

Sing, O barren: The command to sing falls on a woman who has neither borne children nor been married, and Paul quotes the verse at Galatians 4:27 of Sarah and the heavenly Jerusalem, a reading the New Testament itself supplies for the barren singing. The desolate woman's children are promised to outnumber the married wife's, an image the older commentators connect to Israel's return from exile and to a people gathered from the nations without setting the two readings against each other. Verse 2 answers the promise with a command to enlarge the tent and lengthen the cords, preparing room before the increase arrives rather than after it.

Isaiah 54:4-6

forget the shame: Verse 4 promises Zion she will forget the shame of her youth and the reproach of her widowhood, the language of a woman remarried rather than merely rescued. Verse 5 names the ground of that promise: her Maker is her husband, the Lord of hosts is his name, and her Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, three titles joined to one relationship. Verse 6 admits the pain honestly, a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, before the chapter turns to comfort, and the commentators read the marriage figure as covenant loyalty restored rather than a legal remarriage.

Isaiah 54:7-8

small moment: For a small moment have I forsaken thee sets the exile's length against the everlasting kindness promised to follow it, a contrast of scale the older writers press as the whole chapter's argument in miniature. Verse 8 adds a little wrath hiding God's face for a moment, over against the everlasting kindness and mercy that outlasts it. The pairing answers the earlier laments of the book, where the forsaking felt total, with a divine accounting in which the anger is brief and the mercy has no end.

Isaiah 54:9-10

waters of Noah: The oath not to flood the earth again is invoked as the precedent for a stronger oath, that the Lord will not be wroth with Zion nor rebuke her, tying the promise now made to the covenant already sworn to Noah after the flood. Verse 10 pushes the promise further still: mountains may depart and hills be removed, but the covenant of peace will not be removed, a permanence set above the permanence of the created order itself. The older commentators call this among the boldest guarantees in the book, since the flood oath was already understood as unbreakable.

Isaiah 54:11-12

tossed with tempest: The afflicted city, tossed with tempest and not comforted, is promised stones of fair colours and foundations of sapphires, building language that answers the storm with permanence rather than mere shelter. Verse 12 continues the same figure with windows of agates, gates of carbuncles, and borders of pleasant stones, a city built entirely of what elsewhere counted as treasure. The older writers read the jewelled city as looking toward the New Jerusalem of Revelation 21, a connection the later book develops in the same vocabulary of foundations and gates.

Isaiah 54:13-14

taught of the Lord: All thy children shall be taught of the Lord is quoted by the Lord himself at John 6:45 of those who come to him, having heard and learned of the Father, a use the Gospel makes explicitly of this verse. Verse 13 promises great peace to children so taught, and verse 14 grounds the peace in righteousness, a city established and far from oppression and terror. The commentators read the teaching as the new covenant's own mark, an inward instruction rather than instruction by law alone, without settling which future age the verse describes.

Isaiah 54:15-17

not by me: Whosoever gathers against Zion does so not by the Lord's ordaining, and any such coalition is promised to fall for Zion's sake rather than to prevail, verse 15 says. Verse 16 goes further, claiming the smith who forges weapons and the waster who wields them as the Lord's own creation, so that no threat stands outside his sovereignty. Verse 17 states the chapter's most quoted line, that no weapon formed against Zion shall prosper, and calls the whole promise the heritage of the servants of the Lord, closing the chapter on inheritance rather than mere survival.
