Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

a time to every purpose under the heaven: The poem lays out fourteen paired times across eight verses, birth and death opening the list and war and peace closing it, planting and plucking up, killing and healing, weeping and laughing, each pair naming its own appointed hour under the heaven. Delitzsch reads the pairs as a complete circle of human experience rather than a checklist, the point being that a time exists for every one of them, not that a man may choose which time is his. The poem states no doctrine of its own; it waits for verse 11 to say what the ordered times mean for the man living inside them.

Ecclesiastes 3:9-10

What profit hath he that worketh: The refrain question returns from chapter one, what profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth, now asked against the ordered times just listed rather than against wealth or wisdom. The travail itself is named as something God has given the sons of men to be exercised in, not an accident of labour but its assigned burden. Bridges reads the travail as intentional discipline, the toil that trains a creature living inside times he did not set and cannot see the end of.

Ecclesiastes 3:11

he hath set the world in their heart: The verse carries two claims at once, everything made beautiful in its time and the world set in the human heart, and the bench reads the second claim two ways from the same Hebrew word olam: the world or age set in the heart, the reach of a mind that ranges past its own moment, or eternity set in the heart, the word's more common sense, a longing for what time cannot supply. Either reading lands on the same predicament, a creature built for more than the vapor it can hold, unable to find out the work God does from beginning to end. Delitzsch and Gill both take olam as eternity, while other readers keep the world as the wider frame the mind ranges over, and the note carries both readings as readings rather than settling the philology.

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life: The Preacher draws his working conclusion from the time poem, that there is no good in the ordered times themselves but for a man to rejoice and do good in his life, joy taken as response rather than as a discovery to boast of. Verse 13 restates the refrain first heard at 2:24, that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labour, the gift of God, its second appearance in the book by query. Bridges reads the repetition as the book's positive doctrine hardening into a fixed answer, offered again each time the search for profit fails.

Ecclesiastes 3:14

God doeth it, that men should fear before him: Whatsoever God doeth shall be for ever, nothing added to it and nothing taken from it, the permanence of God's work set against the vapor of everything the Preacher has tested under the sun. The stated purpose is not information but reverence, God doeth it, that men should fear before him, one link in the fear-of-God thread the book returns to at 5:7, 7:18, 8:12 and the conclusion itself. Gill reads the unchangeableness of God's work as the ground of the fear commanded, since a work no man can add to or subtract from leaves only worship as the fitting response.

Ecclesiastes 3:15-17

and God requireth that which is past: That which hath been is now, and that which is to be hath already been, and God requireth that which is past, the Preacher noting a repetition in events that matches the repeating pairs of the time poem. He then names a specific grief seen under the sun, wickedness standing in the very place appointed for judgment and iniquity in the place appointed for righteousness, courts corrupted at the point where they should correct corruption. Verse 17 answers the grief without erasing it, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work, the poem's own vocabulary applied to the last accounting.

Ecclesiastes 3:18-19

that they might see that they themselves are beasts: The Preacher states a purpose for the corrupted courts he has just named, that God might manifest the sons of men and let them see that they themselves are beasts, one event befalling man and animal, one dying as the other dies, one breath shared by both. The under-the-sun key applies at full strength here: the Preacher reports exactly what death looks like from ground level, without denying that Scripture elsewhere says more about the soul than the grave can show. Wesley reads the comparison as limited to the body's common fate, not a claim that man has no spirit beyond the beast, since the very next verses go on to ask what only a man can ask.

Ecclesiastes 3:20-22

all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again: All go unto one place, all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again, the plainest statement in the chapter of what the eye sees at any grave. The Preacher then asks, rather than answers, who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth, a genuine question left open under the sun and not a denial that the two spirits differ. The chapter closes where it can honestly close from that vantage point, that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his portion, since no one can be brought back to see what happens after him.
