Acts 3:1-3

Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour, roughly three in the afternoon, the second of the three daily hours of Jewish prayer and a detail the bench reads as ordinary temple piety continuing among believers who had not yet ceased to worship there. A certain man lame from his mother's womb, carried daily to the gate called Beautiful, is old enough in his condition and his begging to be known by sight to every regular worshipper, and the miracle that follows lands on a man the whole temple crowd could identify. He asks Peter and John for alms, expecting the coin a beggar expects, and the exposition marks the gap between what he asked for and what he receives.

Acts 3:4-5

Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, says only Look on us, a command that demands the beggar's full attention before anything is given, and the bench notes the pattern runs opposite to ordinary almsgiving, where eyes are usually turned away. He gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them, still reading the moment by the only category he has, money, and the text leaves that expectation standing unanswered for one more verse before Peter corrects it. The delay is deliberate, building the man's attention toward a gift he has no word yet to expect.

Acts 3:6-8

Silver and gold have I none, Peter says, but such as I have give I thee, and the bench across the centuries has read the line as the church's own confession of poverty in one kind of wealth and abundance in another. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk names the source of the power outright before it is exercised, so the healing cannot be read as Peter's own act, and he took him by the right hand and lifted him up before the man's feet and ankle bones had received any strength of their own. He leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God, the threefold description of motion answering forty years or more of immobility with a body suddenly ordinary, worship rising from the man before any sermon is preached to him.

Acts 3:9-10

all the people saw him walking: All the people saw him walking and praising God, and they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate, the crowd's recognition confirming the miracle rather than the apostles' own claim about it, since this was a face the temple had seen begging for years. They were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him, the same wondering response the sign of Pentecost had produced, and the bench notes the pattern this book keeps, a public sign drawing a crowd that Peter then addresses with the gospel. The healed man himself becomes evidence walking through the temple courts before a word of preaching has been spoken.

Acts 3:11

The lame man which was healed held Peter and John, and all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, a covered colonnade along the temple's eastern wall that later becomes the setting for Jesus's own dispute recorded in John 10:23 and, still later, for the daily meetings of the whole early church described at 5:12. The healed man's grip on the two apostles is itself part of the scene, gratitude expressed by simply refusing to let go, and the crowd gathers around all three of them together. The stage is now set for the second sermon of this book, given in the same setting Jesus himself once taught in.

Acts 3:12-13

Peter's sermon opens by redirecting the crowd's wonder, why marvel ye at this, or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk, the apostle refusing credit before the crowd can offer any. The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus: Peter grounds the miracle in Israel's own covenant God rather than in a new religion, and the bench notes the deliberate continuity, the God his hearers already worship is the one who has just acted. Whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go names the crowd's own part in the crucifixion plainly, alongside the detail that the Roman governor himself had wanted to release him.

Acts 3:14-15

Ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you: Peter sets Barabbas's release against Jesus's condemnation in one sentence, the exchange the crowd itself had called for at the trial now stated back to them without softening. And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead, whereof we are witnesses: the title Prince of life, archegos, the same word used again at 5:31 of Jesus as Prince and Saviour, names him as life's own author killed by the very creatures his life sustains, an irony the bench has long drawn out. Whereof we are witnesses sounds the resurrection formula a second time in this book, testimony offered as evidence rather than as bare assertion.

Acts 3:16

His name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: Peter names the healing's true cause twice over in one sentence, the name of Jesus and faith in that name, and the bench reads the doubling as deliberate emphasis rather than repetition for its own sake. Yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all, the healing performed publicly enough that no one in the crowd can claim it happened elsewhere or to someone else. The verse leaves open whose faith is meant, the apostles' faith exercising the name, the healed man's own faith to rise, or both together, and commentators have read it each way without the text forcing a single answer.

Acts 3:17-18

And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers: Peter's tone turns from indictment to a measure of mercy, naming ignorance rather than malice as the crowd's own excuse, without thereby excusing the act itself. But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled: the suffering Messiah is presented as Scripture's own plan rather than a plan defeated by wicked hands, sovereignty and human guilt held together exactly as they were at 2:23. The bench notes the pastoral wisdom of the order, hard truth about the crime first, then the door opened by ignorance and prophecy together before the call to repent is given.

Acts 3:19-21

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord: the call answers 2:38's repent and be baptized with a wider promise, refreshing from God's own presence, and the bench notes the phrase's kinship with Old Testament language for restoration and rest. And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you names a second coming already anticipated in this early sermon, tying the ascension of chapter one to a future the whole church still watches for. Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things: the traditions divide over how literally to read this restitution, some hearing a renewed creation, some a restored Israel, some both together, and the exposition names the range without settling it, since the text itself points forward rather than defining the term.

Acts 3:22-23

For Moses truly said unto the fathers, a prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me, quoting Deuteronomy 18:15 by name and applying it to Jesus as the prophet like Moses, a title the crowd would have recognized as one of the great unfulfilled promises of the Torah. Him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you: the command to hear is total, covering everything he taught, not a selection of it, and the bench reads this as Peter's own claim that Christ's words carry Moses's own authority and more. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people: the warning is Moses's own, quoted in full, and it falls with its original weight on any hearer who refuses the prophet now standing behind Peter's sermon.

Acts 3:24-26

all the prophets from Samuel: Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days: Peter widens his citation from Moses to the whole prophetic line, presenting the gospel as the goal every prophet after Samuel was already pointing toward. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, and in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed: the Abrahamic promise of Genesis 22:18 is quoted directly to an Israelite crowd as their own inheritance, the blessing reaching the nations without the text setting Israel aside from it. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities: the blessing named is moral transformation, not merely favor, and the word first marks Israel's priority in the gospel's reach without closing the door the rest of this book will open to the nations.
