1 Thessalonians 2:1-2

Paul's proof runs backward, from result to memory: yourselves know our entrance in unto you was not in vain, and the church itself is asked to be the witness. The visit's overture was suffering, having suffered before and were shamefully entreated at Philippi just weeks earlier, the flogging and jail of Acts 16. Yet in that same God the missionaries were bold to speak the gospel of God with much contention, opposition met with boldness rather than caution.

1 Thessalonians 2:3-4

The apostles clear themselves of three charges pagan preachers on the make regularly earned, deceit, uncleanness, and guile, all set against their own ministry by name. Approval to preach was itself a trust from God, put in trust with the gospel, so the aim runs the other direction from a crowd pleaser's, not as pleasing men, but God. The verse ends with the one witness no flatterer can survive, God, which trieth our hearts, the standard the whole defense answers to.

1 Thessalonians 2:5-6

Two more charges fall, flattering words and a cloke of covetousness, the second the specific danger of an itinerant teacher living off a young congregation's purse. God is witness stands over the first charge exactly as the trying of hearts stood over the last verse, an appeal no human audience can adjudicate. Nor of men sought we glory adds a third refusal, and burdensome names the currency, financial claim on the church, which the apostles as apostles of Christ had every right to make and did not.

1 Thessalonians 2:7-8

The register turns from courtroom to nursery: we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children, the same word Paul uses of a mother's own warmth rather than a hired attendant's duty. Affectionately desirous names the feeling behind the figure, and the gift offered matches it, willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls. Because ye were dear unto us gives the reason last, so the whole verse reads as report rather than claim.

1 Thessalonians 2:9-10

Labour and travail names work by day and the pain of work by night, and labouring night and day for wages given up specifies it, tentmaking practiced alongside preaching so the church at Thessalonica would carry no charge for the gospel it received. Ye remember calls the congregation itself to confirm the record, the same appeal made through the chapter. Verse 10 widens the witness to include God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe, the three adverbs covering duty to God, to neighbor, and to the church in turn.

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12

The nurse's tenderness of verse 7 is joined now by a father's charge, as ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, the same household run two ways, comfort and challenge together. Every one names the pastoral care as personal rather than a sermon addressed to a crowd. The aim stated in verse 12 gathers the whole chapter's defense into one purpose, that ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory, calling and conduct bound together.

1 Thessalonians 2:13

not as the word of men: The chapter's defense turns to doctrine at its center: they received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, an explicit claim of divine authorship for apostolic preaching, not merely a human report about God. Which effectually worketh also in you that believe adds the mark of true reception, a word that acts in the hearer rather than merely informing him. The verse states the letter's own doctrine of Scripture plainly, God's word received and known as God's word by its effect.

1 Thessalonians 2:14

Paul draws the encouragement first, before the hard verses that follow: this young Gentile church became followers of the churches of God which in Judea, imitating not Paul now but a whole line of suffering congregations. The parallel is suffering itself, ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews, Thessalonian Gentiles persecuted by their own townsmen just as Judean believers were persecuted by theirs. The verse's own phrase, of your own countrymen, already narrows the coming charge to a particular persecuting party rather than a people as such, the distinction the next two verses will make explicit.

1 Thessalonians 2:15

This verse has been used for centuries to indict the Jewish people as such, and that reading is not the text's own: Paul is an Israelite writing of his own kinsmen according to the flesh with the grief of Romans 9:1-5, not a Gentile writing them off. Who killed the Lord Jesus names the specific Judean authorities behind the crucifixion, the same officials and their agents who drove Paul himself from city to city and had already forced this letter's own mission out of Thessalonica by a mob. Their own prophets sets the charge inside Israel's own story, the recurring persecution of true prophets Stephen names at Acts 7, and have persecuted us keeps the target current and specific rather than ancestral or racial.

1 Thessalonians 2:16

Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles names the concrete offense driving the whole passage, the same synagogue opposition that hounded Paul's mission from Pisidian Antioch onward and had just chased it out of Thessalonica itself. To fill up their sins alway echoes Genesis 15:16's cup of iniquity language, a measure completed by a course of action, not a birth. The wrath is come upon them to the uttermost is read two ways among the commentators, a settled sentence already visible in the mounting Judean unrest of that decade, or a prophetic anticipation of the judgment that fell in the destruction of Jerusalem; both readings keep the wrath fixed on the persecuting party the verse has just named, and neither extends it to the Jewish people as a whole or as a perpetual verdict, a reading this passage has wrongly been made to carry and does not.

1 Thessalonians 2:17-18

Taken from you translates a word for the pain of being orphaned, the same grief in reverse, the missionaries torn from the church rather than the church losing them, and for a short time in presence, not in heart insists the separation was only physical. The desire to return was active, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire, and verse 18 names the reason it did not happen, we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again, but Satan hindered us. The obstacle is named as spiritual opposition rather than mere circumstance, without specifying its form, a hindrance Paul elsewhere associates with persecution and closed doors rather than personal failure.

1 Thessalonians 2:19-20

The chapter's defense of Paul's absence closes on the letter's recurring horizon, the coming of the Lord, the second of the parousia thread's five beats after 1:10. For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing sets the Thessalonians themselves as the answer, are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming, the church itself named as Paul's reward at that day rather than any achievement of his own. Crown of rejoicing draws on the victor's wreath, and verse 20 states the conclusion already true in the present, ye are our glory and joy, so the future crown and the present relationship are made one thing.
