1 Samuel 18:1-4

Jonathan is heir to Saul's throne, and his love falls on the very man Samuel has already anointed to take it from him. He strips himself of robe, garments, sword, bow and girdle and gives them to David, the king's own son handing over the tokens of a throne with his own hands. Older writers read the scene as a figure of self-emptying love, one soul laying down its claim for another; that reading belongs to the commentators, not to the text's own words. The covenant sworn here holds through the outlaw years at 20:14-15 and outlives Jonathan himself when David keeps faith with his son for its sake.

1 Samuel 18:5

David's own wisdom is stated here and named twice more before the chapter ends, at verses 14 and 15, a repetition too heavy to be filler. Saul sets him over the men of war on the strength of it, and both the people and Saul's own servants receive him well. Gill reads the repeated word as more than tact, a shadow of the Servant who shall deal prudently in Isaiah 52:13.

1 Samuel 18:6-7

The women's refrain, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands, is Hebrew poetic parallelism doubling the second line for effect, the pattern of these songs generally rather than an exact tally. Saul does not hear it as poetry; he hears the count and it becomes the seed of everything that follows in this chapter. The line lodges deep enough in Israel's memory that the Philistines themselves quote it back at David in 21:11 and 29:5.

1 Samuel 18:8-9

Saul's arithmetic is envy's arithmetic, two lines of a folk song read as a claim on his crown. Barnes takes the king's own complaint as Saul naming his own fear before anyone else names it for him, there is only the kingdom left for him. Verse 9 marks the turn in a single clause, Saul eyed David from that day and forward, the first note of a watchfulness that runs the length of the book.

1 Samuel 18:10-11

This is the second time the evil spirit from God comes upon Saul, following 16:14, and the text does not soften the phrase into something safer. Wesley reads it as permission, God allowing what he does not author; Clarke notes an old Arabic tradition that read outright possession, Saul uttering a sort of demoniacal prediction. The javelin makes its first appearance in Saul's hand here, and every javelin in these two books stays there, thrown at David again in 19:10 and at Jonathan in 20:33; Saul names his intent aloud, and David escapes him twice in the one encounter.

1 Samuel 18:12

Fear of David becomes this chapter's refrain, spoken again at 18:15 and 18:29. The verse states its own reason in one breath, the Lord with David and the Lord departed from Saul, the two halves of 16:13-14 set side by side. Henry reads the fear as proof Saul already knows, in his own conscience, what the anointing at Ramah settled.

1 Samuel 18:13-16

Saul's promotion is exile dressed as honor, sending David out of the court and into the field where a Philistine sword might finish what Saul will not do himself. The chapter names David's wisdom a third time here, and all Israel and Judah loved him answers Saul's fear with the nation's own verdict. Gill notes that this last clause is missing from the Vatican copy of the Septuagint, along with the verses that follow it, a textual point worth naming without resting weight on it.

1 Samuel 18:17-19

fight the Lord’s battles: Saul dresses the marriage offer in pious language, fight the Lord's battles, while his own stated purpose is that the Philistines' hand should fall on David rather than his own. The days run out and Merab goes instead to Adriel the Meholathite, a broken pledge the narrator records without comment. Wesley and Barnes both note that the five sons of that marriage are the men later given over to the Gibeonites at 2 Samuel 21:8-9. David's own answer, Who am I, and what is my life, matches the humility Samuel commended at chapter 16, spoken now under a king already working his ruin.

1 Samuel 18:20-21

Michal is the one woman in Scripture the text says loved a man; every other marriage in the Bible is recorded from the man's side or arranged without a word about hers. Saul hears it and turns her love into a weapon, that she may be a snare to him, the second attempt after Merab to use a daughter to destroy David through the Philistines. The word snare marks Saul's whole strategy in this chapter, unable to strike David himself, he keeps building traps for other hands to spring.

1 Samuel 18:22-25

Saul has his servants speak to David secretly, so the offer will look like the court's own idea and not the king's trap. David answers with the same self-estimate as before, a poor man, and lightly esteemed, before Saul names his price, not silver but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, dressed as zeal for the covenant of circumcision while Saul's stated aim is to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. Barnes reads the choice of payment itself as one more jab at the people Scripture keeps calling uncircumcised, the label already fixed on Israel's enemy at 14:6.

1 Samuel 18:26-27

David does not wait out the allotted days; he moves at once and brings back two hundred foreskins, double the number required. Clarke notes that the Septuagint reads only a hundred, matching both Saul's demand and David's own later count of the price at 2 Samuel 3:14, and takes the doubled Hebrew figure as a copying variant rather than a boast. Either way the price is paid in full, and Saul, having set a trap meant to kill David, is bound by his own word to give him Michal.

1 Samuel 18:28-29

the Lord was with David: Saul now sees plainly what the chapter has already said three times, that the Lord is with David, and the seeing does not soften him; it hardens fear into settled policy. Verse 29 states the change precisely, Saul became David's enemy continually, moving from fits of jealousy to a fixed course. Gill reads the shift as the difference between a feeling and a decision, the king choosing the enmity his fear had only threatened before.

1 Samuel 18:30

The chapter closes as its middle section did, David's wisdom set once more against every other name in Saul's court, his own name honored above them all. The pattern the chapter has laid down, David succeeding and Saul fearing him for it, carries forward into the chapters that follow rather than resolving here. Clarke reads the unnamed war against the Philistine princes as further proof that skill, not chance, is what the narrator keeps describing.
