1 Corinthians 14:1

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy: the chapter opens with two imperatives in one breath, diokete, pursue love as a hunter pursues game, and zeloute, be zealous for the gifts, refusing to let chapter 13 be read as a brake on chapter 12's desire. Prophesy is named ahead of the rest at once, before the chapter has argued the case, because Paul already knows where the comparison with tongues will land. The bench reads the verse as the letter's own summary of what follows, love as the engine and prophecy as the gift chapter 14 will spend forty verses commending.

1 Corinthians 14:2-4

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him: the first contrast is address, tongues directed Godward, unintelligible to the hearers even though the speaker utters real mysteries in the spirit. Prophecy is the opposite in every respect, verse 3 says, speaking to men, unto edification, exhortation and comfort, three words the bench reads as building up, stirring up, and soothing, the whole range of a congregation's need. Verse 4 states the contrast in its sharpest form, tongues edify the speaker himself, prophecy edifies the church, and both edifications are real, only one reaches beyond the one who has the gift.

1 Corinthians 14:5

I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: Paul states his own preference without contempt for the gift he ranks second, wanting the Corinthians to have more, not less, of the Spirit's speech. The comparison that follows names the reason, greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying, the ranking measured entirely by what reaches the assembled church rather than by which gift feels more supernatural. The exception clause already anticipates the chapter's rule at verse 27, that tongues without interpretation have no claim on the public assembly at all.

1 Corinthians 14:6-9

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? Paul turns the argument on himself, the one man in Corinth who spoke in tongues more than all of them, and asks what even his own gift would be worth to them left unintelligible. Verses 7 and 8 give two illustrations from music and war, a pipe or harp that gives no distinction in the sounds teaches no tune, and a trumpet with an uncertain sound prepares no soldier for battle, the second image especially pointed since a garbled battle signal could cost lives. Verse 9 draws the plain application, words not easy to be understood are speaking into the air, sound spent on no one.

1 Corinthians 14:10-11

There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification: every human language, however foreign, carries real meaning to those who share it, so unintelligibility is not a property of the tongue itself but of the hearer's ignorance of it. Verse 11 draws the personal picture, if I know not the meaning of the voice I am a barbarian to the speaker and he a barbarian to me, barbaros the Greek word for the stammering sound foreign speech made to an untrained ear. The illustration argues that an uninterpreted tongue in the assembly makes strangers of brothers who ought to understand one another.

1 Corinthians 14:12-13

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church: the zeal Paul commanded in verse 1 is not rebuked here but redirected, its proper aim not personal display but the church's building up. Verse 13 supplies the practical remedy for the tongue-speaker himself, let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret, so that the gift already given might yet serve the assembly it currently cannot reach. The bench notes Paul does not tell the Corinthians to stop desiring tongues, only to desire them toward the end that makes them useful in public.

1 Corinthians 14:14-17

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful: the verse distinguishes spirit and understanding as two real faculties both engaged in prayer, the tongue-gift genuinely spiritual even where the mind gains nothing from it. Paul's own resolve in verse 15 answers the imbalance rather than abandoning either faculty, I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also, the same doubling applied to singing. Verses 16 and 17 press the case toward the assembly's weakest member, the unlearned hearer who cannot say Amen at a thanksgiving he never understood, so that thanks well spoken in an unknown tongue still leaves the other unedified.

1 Corinthians 14:18-19

I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Paul removes any suspicion that his ranking of prophecy above tongues comes from lacking the gift himself, since he outstrips the whole Corinthian church in it and thanks God for it openly. Verse 19 then states his personal preference in the sharpest possible arithmetic, five words with the understanding in the church rather than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue, the ratio chosen for its extremity rather than its precision. The bench reads the two verses together as the strongest possible defense against the charge that Paul disparages tongues, spoken by the one man in the letter with every right to prefer his own gift instead.

1 Corinthians 14:20

Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men: the rebuke names the exact confusion behind Corinth's fascination with tongues in public worship, a taste for the spectacular mistaken for spiritual maturity. Paul redirects the child image rather than discarding it, welcoming childlike innocence toward malice, kakia, while demanding adult judgment, phrenes, about worship's purpose. The bench notes the same charge already stood at 3:1, babes in Christ, carried here into the specific matter of gifts used for display rather than understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:21-22

In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord: Paul cites Isaiah 28:11-12, where foreign tongues were Israel's own sign of judgment, Assyrian speech overtaking a people who would not hear their own prophets, and the citation is keep-hard, both wording and reference secure across the tradition. Verse 22 draws the surprising conclusion, tongues are for a sign not to believers but to unbelievers, prophesying not for unbelievers but for believers, applying Isaiah's judgment-sign to Corinth's own assembly rather than to its outsiders. The bench flags this as one of the chapter's harder turns, and reads Paul as warning that tongues without interpretation function toward an unbeliever exactly as Isaiah's foreign speech did toward unbelieving Israel, a sign of judgment rather than an invitation.

1 Corinthians 14:23-25

If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? the illustration makes verse 22's hard saying concrete, uninterpreted tongues filling the room and driving a visiting outsider to conclude the church has lost its mind. Verse 24 sets prophecy's opposite effect beside it, the same outsider hearing intelligible prophecy is convinced of all, judged of all, his own secrets exposed rather than his confusion deepened. Verse 25 gives the outcome Paul wants, falling on his face he worships God and reports that God is in you of a truth, prophecy doing the evangelistic work tongues without interpretation cannot do in mixed company.

1 Corinthians 14:26

How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation: the verse pictures Corinthian worship as Paul actually found it, gifts overlapping and competing for the floor rather than absent, so the chapter's problem was never too little of the Spirit but too little order around too much of it. The closing rule governs everything that follows to the chapter's end, let all things be done unto edifying, a single test applied to every gift named rather than a new restriction on any of them. The bench notes this verse is the chapter's hinge, moving from what each gift is and does to how a congregation full of gifted people takes turns.

1 Corinthians 14:27-28

If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret: the first concrete rule caps how many may speak in tongues in a single meeting and requires them to take turns rather than speak together, with interpretation required for each. Verse 28 gives the rule its enforcement, if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself, and to God, the gift not extinguished but redirected to private prayer when the assembly has no means to understand it. The bench reads the private option as evidence Paul never doubted the tongue itself was real prayer, only that it had no business filling public time nobody present could follow.

1 Corinthians 14:29-31

Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge: the same limit and the same order govern prophecy, with a further check tongues did not carry, the other prophets weighing what has been said, the discerning of spirits from 12:10 put into practice as a standing procedure. Verse 30 adds a courtesy rule for a prophet interrupted by a fresh revelation, let the first hold his peace, ranking order above even the urgency of a new word. Verse 31 states the purpose behind every rule so far, ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted, the goal never fewer gifts operating but every gift reaching its hearers in turn.

1 Corinthians 14:32-33

And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets: the verse states a principle Corinth's disorder had denied in practice, that a genuine prophetic gift never overrides its holder's own self-control, since ecstatic compulsion beyond a man's power to restrain was the mark of pagan oracle, not of the Holy Ghost. Verse 33 gives the reason in God's own character, for God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints, the appeal to universal church practice meant to end any claim that Corinth's chaos was simply how the Spirit worked. The bench reads the two verses as the theological foundation under every rule already given, order flows from the nature of the God who gives the gifts.

1 Corinthians 14:34-35

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law: the command sits inside a chapter about order in the assembly, and it has been read three ways across church history, a universal and permanent silencing of women in worship, an early scribal addition since some manuscripts place these verses after verse 40, and a restriction addressed to disorderly conduct in this one congregation. This site's own tradition reads the command as situational, answering a disruption in the Corinthian assembly rather than a timeless universal silencing, a reading that stands beside 11:5 in the same letter, where women praying and prophesying in the gathered church is assumed and regulated, not forbidden. Verse 35 narrows the complaint further, if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home, language fitting married women interrupting the weighing of prophecy from verses 29 to 33 more naturally than a blanket ban the letter's own eleventh chapter had already ruled out.

1 Corinthians 14:36

What, came the word of God out from you, or came it unto you only: two sharp questions, and the bench reads them as addressed to the whole congregation's self-importance rather than to any one dispute in the chapter, since Corinth was neither the source of the gospel nor its only recipient, so its own customs answer to a wider church rather than setting the standard for it. The rebuke functions as a hinge, closing the specific instructions of verses 26 to 35 by reminding the letter's most independent-minded church that its practices are accountable beyond itself. Paul makes the same appeal to universal church custom again in 11:16, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

1 Corinthians 14:37-38

If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord: Paul closes the argument by claiming apostolic authority in the plainest possible terms, his own letter carrying the Lord's own command, a claim that would answer any Corinthian tempted to set personal revelation above the apostle's instruction. Verse 38 states the consequence for refusal without softening it, if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant, leaving the willfully unpersuaded to their own choice rather than arguing further. The bench notes the verse as one of the New Testament's clearest self-claims to inspired authority, written by the same hand that elsewhere calls his own opinions merely his own.

1 Corinthians 14:39-40

Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues: the chapter's closing command holds both gifts in the same sentence and gives neither the last word alone, prophecy still ranked first for its use to the church, tongues still protected from a prohibition the chapter never once considered. Verse 40 supplies the single rule that has governed every instruction since verse 26, let all things be done decently and in order, euschemonos kai kata taxin, order that regulates the gifts without ever silencing them. The bench reads the pair as the chapter's own balance held to the end, the Spirit's fire welcomed and Paul's order applied to it together, neither command permitted to cancel the other.
