I Am
Seven times in John, Jesus completes the same sentence: “I am…”, the bread, the light, the door, the shepherd, the resurrection, the way, the vine. Each metaphor gathers up an Old Testament picture and says: it was always about me. And beneath the seven predicates lies the bare, unbearable claim: the divine Name itself, egō eimi.

The Seven Predicates

I am the Bread of Life
John 6:35“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.”
Behind it: The manna in the wilderness (Exod 16): bread from heaven that kept Israel alive a day at a time; Jesus is the true and lasting bread.

I am the Light of the World
John 8:12“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Behind it: The pillar of fire that led Israel by night (Exod 13:21) and the promised light to the nations (Isa 42:6; 49:6), spoken at the Feast of Tabernacles' lamp-lighting.

I am the Door
John 10:9“I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved.”
Behind it: The BSB renders the word gate, the older English door, and the picture is the same one: the single opening of the sheepfold, and the door marked with Passover blood (Exod 12) through which the household is saved.

I am the Good Shepherd
John 10:11“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”
Behind it: “The LORD is my shepherd” (Ps 23) and God's indictment of Israel's false shepherds (Ezek 34), Jesus takes YHWH's own shepherd-role (Beale–Carson; Bailey).

I am the Resurrection and the Life
John 11:25“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.”
Behind it: Ezekiel's valley of dry bones raised by God's breath (Ezek 37), spoken at the tomb of Lazarus, then proven.

John 14:6“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Behind it: The way through the wilderness and the way of holiness (Isa 35:8); the single road into the Father's presence.

John 15:1“I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard… apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Behind it: Israel as God's vine that yielded wild grapes (Ps 80; Isa 5), Jesus is the true vine Israel failed to be; the branches are grafted into Him (cf. Rom 11:17).
The Absolute 'I AM'
egō eimi: the Name, not a metaphor
Three times Jesus says egō eimi with no predicate at all, the exact words of the Greek Old Testament for God's self-naming at the burning bush (“I AM THAT I AM,” Exod 3:14) and God's “I am he” to Israel through Isaiah (43:10). His hearers understood the claim precisely: they reached for stones.
Sign and Saying, Paired
The sayings are not free-floating claims: several are welded to a sign that proves them. He feeds five thousand, then says “I am the bread of life.” He opens a blind man's eyes, then says “I am the light of the world.” He raises Lazarus, having just said “I am the resurrection, and the life.” The deed authenticates the word; the word interprets the deed.
