One alarm was the recognized signal for the eastern division of the camp (the tribes of Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun) to march; two alarms gave the signal for the southern to move; and, though it is not in our present Hebrew text, the Septuagint has, that on three alarms being sounded, those on the west; while on four blasts, those on the north decamped.

The alarm is a broken run of “short blasts”, and verse 7 gives the ordinary call: “you are to sound long blasts, not short ones”. One sounding moves the east camps and a second moves the south.

The second signal moves the southern camp, Reuben with Simeon and Gad, which Numbers 2:16 had set to go second. John Wesley takes the closing words as the sign for that camp to march and for the rest to follow in turn. Reuben's camp went next after Judah's.

When ye blow an alarm the second time - A single alarm, as above stated, was a signal for the eastward division to march; two such alarms, the signal for the south division; and probably three for the west division, and four for the north. It is more likely that this was the case, than that a single alarm served for each, with a small interval between them.
