When you sound short blasts
on Numbers 10:5-7
The alarm is a broken run of “short blasts”, and verse 7 gives the ordinary call: “you are to sound long blasts, not short ones”. One sounding moves the east camps and a second moves the south.

Matthew Henry, Gill and Clarke take the short blasts of an alarm as a broken, quavering sound and the gathering call as one even note. Barnes reads the alarm the other way, as one continuous peal. Henry adds that Joel 2:1 sounds an alarm when the people face God's judgment.
