5 notes on this verseon Matthew 24:29-30
We are invited to flock to Christ's passion wheresoever in Scripture it is read of, that through it we may be able to come to God's word. These things, therefore, shall not come to pass by any diminution of light, for in another place we read that the light of the sun shall be sevenfold; but by comparison with real light, all things shall seem dim. By the powers of heaven, we understand the bands of the Angels.

sign of the Son of man in heaven
on Matthew 24:30-31
Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn draws directly on Daniel 7:13's one like the Son of man coming with the clouds of heaven, the title Jesus has claimed for himself since 8:20, and on Zechariah 12:10's they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and shall mourn. He shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds answers the scattering of persecution in verses 9 through 13 with a final ingathering that leaves no elect person unreached. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the trumpet against 1 Corinthians 15:52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16, the same event named from more than one angle across the New Testament.

The Church Fathers1 voice
(Verse 30) And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven. Let us understand this sign, either as the cross, so that the Jews may see the one they crucified (according to Zechariah (Zech. XII) and John (John XIX)); or as the banner of triumphant victory. And then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Those who did not have citizenship in heaven will mourn, but they are written in the earth.
The Nineteenth Century2 voices
Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man - The plain meaning of this is, that the destruction of Jerusalem will be such a remarkable instance of Divine vengeance, such a signal manifestation of Christ’s power and glory, that all the Jewish tribes shall mourn, and many will, in consequence of this manifestation of God, be led to acknowledge Christ and his religion. By της γης, of the land, in the text, is evidently meant here, as in several other places, the land of Judea and its tribes, either its then inhabitants, or the Jewish people wherever found.
on Matthew 24:29-35
In this part of our Lord’s prophecy he describes his own second coming to judge the world. This, at all events, seems the natural meaning of the passage: to take any lower view appears to be a violent straining of Scripture language. If the solemn words here used mean nothing more than the coming of the Roman armies to Jerusalem, we may explain away anything in the Bible.
