6 notes on this verseYe shall not kill it and her young in one day - This precept was certainly intended to inculcate mercy and tenderness of heart; and so the Jews understood it. When it is necessary to take away the lives of innocent animals for the support of our own, we should do it in such a way as not to blunt our moral feelings; and deplore the necessity, while we feel an express gratitude to God for permission, to do it.

The third speech turns to an animal's life: a newborn stays "with its mother for seven days" and is acceptable from the eighth. An ox or sheep may not be slaughtered on the same day as its young, and Leviticus gives no reason.

Adam Clarke took the rule as a lesson in mercy and tenderness of heart, and he says the Jews understood it so. He held that a man who kills an animal for food should not blunt his own moral feelings. The law guards the man as well as the beast.
