9 notes on this verseThe house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel - That is, in those days in which the Jews shall be brought in with the fullness of the Gentiles. Out of the land of the north - From Chaldea. This prophecy has two aspects: one refers to the return from the Babylonish captivity; the other, to the glorious days of Christianity. But the words may refer to that gathering together of the Jews, not only from Chaldea, but from the countries of their dispersion over the face of the whole earth, and uniting them in the Christian Church.

The LORD says “I am your master”, a Hebrew verb that also means to be a husband. He brings a remnant to Zion, “one from a city and two from a family”, under “shepherds after My own heart”. Judah and Israel will come together from the land of the north.

The kingdom had split after Solomon at 1 Kings 12, and here the two houses walk together again. Ezekiel 37:15 to 22 gives the same promise with two sticks joined into one. The north held both exiles, Assyria and Babylon.

This is fulfilled specifically in the coming of Christ, when the twelve tribes believed in the Gospel together, abandoning the land of the North, the harshest cold, and leaving behind the dominion of the devil. They then received the promised land, which had been promised to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I recently edited a small book about the promised land.

The prophet has just described the return of the ten tribes Jer 3:14, etc. Israel is represented as the first to repent, and Judah must go to her, in order that they may come together back to the holy land, divided no longer into Jews and Israelites, but merged into one people. Out of the land of the north - The objection that the Jews were not carried like the Israelites into the northern provinces of Assyria Jer 3:12, but into Babylonia, misinterprets the whole prophecy, the gist of which is that in case of Israel’s repentance, Judah must humbly seek her out, and be content henceforward to take the inferior place, as having been the more guilty (see Jer 3:11).
