in Ezekiel 38I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed. I will pour out torrents of rain, hailstones, fire, and sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him.

8 notes on this verseGreat hailstones, fire, and brimstone - These are probably figurative expressions, to signify that the whole tide of the war should be against him, and that his defeat and slaughter should be great. Abp. Newcome supposes all the above prophecy remains yet to be fulfilled. Where such eminent scribes are divided, who shall decide!

Gog's host turns on itself, “every man’s sword will be against his brother,” the same panic that scattered Gideon's Midianites. The plagues gather the language of Sodom's judgment. The oracle closes where the book always closes, “Then they will know that I am the LORD,” making Gog's defeat a revelation.

Fire and sulfur recall Sodom in Genesis 19:24, and hail recalls the plague in Exodus 9:23 to 24, as Jamieson, Fausset and Brown observe. Adam Clarke takes these as figures for a total defeat and admits that eminent scholars divide over whether the prophecy is fulfilled.
