The “hooks in your jaws” repeat Pharaoh's sentence at 29:4. The allies ring Israel's known world: Persia to the east, Cush and Put to the south and west, and Gomer and Beth-togarmah from the north. Keil reads the list as gathered from every quarter against the one land.

Persia lay to the east, while Cush and Put lay far to the south and west in Africa. Albert Barnes observes that adding southern peoples to northern invaders shows a general alliance of the enemies of God's people. The list reaches toward every edge of the known world.
