(Verse 15, 16.) The sword is outside, and pestilence and famine are within. Those who are in the field will die by the sword; and those who are in the city will be consumed by pestilence and famine. And those who escape will be saved; they will be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, trembling. Each one in their own wickedness. The seventy, the doves of the valleys, or as Theodotus translated, the meditators, remained completely silent.

Three instruments close in from every direction, the sword without, the pestilence and the famine within, so that whichever way a person turns, siege or open field, one of the three finds him. Verse 16 allows a remnant to escape to the mountains, but only to grieve there, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity, which Henry reads as the chapter's own answer to any hope that escape means acquittal: the survivors mourn because they know the cause was their own, not merely Babylon's army.
