The text sets out the harem's process: twelve months of treatments, then one night with the king. In the morning each woman went "to a second harem under the care of Shaashgaz". She would not return to the king "unless he delighted in her and summoned her by name".

Clarke explains the rule: each woman could take whatever dress, colors or jewels she thought would set her off best. Wesley holds that every woman the king took became a wife of lower rank, as Hagar was to Abraham. On that reading Esther's night with the king carried no dishonour.

Whatsoever she desired - When any of the young women were called to go to the king, it appears that it was an ordinance that whatever kind of dress stuff, color, jewels, etc., they thought best to set off their persons, and render them more engaging, should be given them.
