Mordecai's line runs to Kish, of "the tribe of Benjamin," the house that gave Israel its first king, Saul son of Kish. Keil and others trace the line to Saul, whose war with Agag at 1 Samuel 15:8 returns when Haman the Agagite appears at 3:1.

Barnes takes the man carried into exile to be Kish, Mordecai's great-grandfather, and dates the deportation with Jeconiah to 598 BC. His tribe was Benjamin, and his kingdom was Judah. Gill notes the kingdom held both tribes, so a Benjamite carried off with its king was called a Jew.
