With their journey, and through grief and trouble at what they met with: and refreshed themselves there: that is, at Bahurim, with food and rest; which revived their spirits, and put as it were new life and soul into them, as the word used signifies. Josephus (y) says, when David came to Jordan, he refreshed his weary men. (y) Antiqu. l. 7. c. 9. sect. 4.

Shimei keeps pace on the hillside the whole way, stones and dust added to the curse already spoken, so that the abuse is not one outburst but a running accompaniment to the king's flight. Verse fourteen closes the scene on David's side of the chapter with three plain words, came weary, and refreshed themselves there, before the narrative crosses over to Absalom's camp for the rest of the chapter. The chapter's structure itself argues David's case: while the king absorbs curses on a hillside, the son he fled is about to take counsel that will cost him everything.

John Gill notes that the word for refreshed means that new life and soul were put into them. He places the rest at Bahurim, while Josephus puts it at the Jordan. Hushai's warning at 17:16 will soon send them on again.
