Manasseh sets "the carved Asherah pole he had made" in the temple. Verse 8 ties Israel's hold on the land to a condition, "if only they are careful to do all I have commanded them." The image stands in the very house where the promise and its condition were spoken.

JFB hear the promise of 2 Samuel 7:10, where the LORD pledged a place where Israel would be disturbed no more. Gill ties the condition to Isaiah 1:19, where eating the best of the land rests on willing obedience. Israel had already lost the land at 17:23.
