In the holy place, as distinct from the courts in the next verse; and these were sacred to the idols of the Gentiles: of which the Lord said, in Jerusalem will I put my name; in the temple there, devoted to his service, called by his name, and where his name was called upon, see Deu 12:5 and to erect altars to idols here must be very abominable to him.

Manasseh's altars stand inside the house, of which the LORD had said, "In Jerusalem I will put My Name," a promise of Deuteronomy 12. That promise is now turned against itself. The place chosen to carry the name carries altars to a rival, in the house and in both courtyards.

The “altars” of this verse seem to be the same with those of 2Ki 21:5, and consequently were not in the temple building, but in the outer and inner courts.
