Romans 4:1-2

Paul turns to Abraham as the test case for the whole argument of chapter three, asking what Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found. If Abraham were justified by works he would have ground to glory, but not before God: whatever boast a man might raise before other men collapses the moment it stands in front of God’s own righteousness. The patriarch every Jewish reader claimed as father becomes, in Paul’s hands, the proof that justification by law keeping fails even for the father of the law keeping nation.

Romans 4:3

For what saith the scripture, Paul asks, and answers from Genesis 15:6: Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. The verb is logizomai, an accounting term used some eleven times across this chapter, the crediting of a sum to an account that did not earn it by its own labor. Abraham’s faith is not itself the currency of righteousness; it is the empty hand that received a righteousness credited from outside him, centuries before the law was given at Sinai.

Romans 4:4-5

To him that worketh, wages are not reckoned of grace, but of debt: an employer owes a laborer his pay, and no one calls a paycheck a gift. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness, and the phrase justifieth the ungodly is as bold a statement of grace as the New Testament contains, since the law expressly condemns any judge who justifies the wicked. Paul lets the scandal stand rather than soften it, because the scandal is the gospel.

Romans 4:6-8

Paul adds a second witness from David, describing the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works. The citation, Psalm 32:1-2, pairs righteousness imputed with sin forgiven and covered, so that David’s own confession of pardon becomes Paul’s proof that imputation and non-imputation are two sides of a single act of grace. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin: the psalm king and the patriarch stand together as the law and the writings both testifying to a righteousness that comes apart from works.

Romans 4:9-10

Paul now presses the timing question: does this blessedness fall on the circumcision only, or on the uncircumcision also, since faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness? He answers with a date rather than an argument, asking when it was reckoned, in circumcision or uncircumcision, and finds the reckoning fell in Genesis 15, fourteen chapters before Abraham’s circumcision in Genesis 17. The sequence itself is the proof that circumcision could not have been the ground of his justification, since the justification came first.

Romans 4:11-12

Abraham received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while yet uncircumcised, so that circumcision confirms a righteousness already given rather than producing it. This makes him the father of all who believe though uncircumcised, and the father of circumcision to those who are not of the circumcision only but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham. One father, two families joined by the same believing rather than by the same rite, which is Paul’s whole point against a gospel that would re-erect the wall the cross took down.

Romans 4:13-15

The promise that Abraham should be the heir of the world did not come to him or his seed through the law but through the righteousness of faith, and Paul draws out why: if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of none effect. The law, rather than producing heirs, worketh wrath, because where no law is there is no transgression, and a covenant that runs on law keeping can only ever expose failure, never secure an inheritance. Grace and law cannot share the same foundation without one of them ceasing to be itself.

Romans 4:16

Therefore the promise is of faith, that it might be by grace, so that it may be sure to all the seed, not only to that which is of the law but also to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. Paul states the mechanism plainly: faith is the means precisely because grace is the source, and only a promise resting on grace received by faith can stand sure for every kind of believer, circumcised and uncircumcised alike. The security of the promise depends on taking law keeping out of its foundation altogether.

Romans 4:17

Abraham believed before him whom he believed, even God who quickeneth the dead and calleth those things which be not as though they were: the two descriptions, life from the dead and being from non-being, name the two impossibilities Abraham’s own faith would soon have to face, a body as good as dead and a womb long closed. Paul roots Abraham’s faith not in optimism about circumstances but in a settled knowledge of who God is and what kind of God he has always been. The same God who spoke the world into existence out of nothing is the God every believer trusts for what still looks impossible.

Romans 4:18-19

Against hope Abraham believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to the word so shall thy seed be. Being not weak in faith, he considered his own body now as good as dead, being about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb, and Paul lingers over the physical facts rather than skipping past them, because the size of the obstacle is what makes the faith worth naming. Real faith looks straight at the evidence against the promise and believes the promise anyway.

Romans 4:20-21

He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God, being fully persuaded that what he had promised he was able also to perform. The strength Paul describes is not the absence of a struggle but its outcome, a wavering that did not win, and the glory Abraham gave to God is named as the fruit of that settled persuasion. Faith that endures without staggering is, in Paul’s phrase, itself an act of worship.

Romans 4:22

And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness: the therefore gathers up the whole chapter’s argument, since the imputation named here and the imputation of verse 3 are the same act, the faith described across nineteen intervening verses being exactly what verse 3 already announced. Paul closes the Abraham case exactly where he opened it, letting the patriarch’s whole life confirm the single verse from Genesis that started the argument.

Romans 4:23-25

Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but for us also, the imputation reaching those who trust him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead. Genesis 15:6 was never only ancient history; Paul reads it as written with the church in view, so that Abraham’s justification becomes the pattern for every believer’s own. The chapter ends on the object of that faith named precisely: Jesus, who was delivered for our offences and raised again for our justification, his death answering for sin and his resurrection sealing the verdict of righteous.
