Romans 14:1-3

Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations: Paul opens the chapter's pastoral question, not who is right about food, but how the church receives a brother whose conscience is not yet free, receiving him for fellowship rather than for debate. One believeth that he may eat all things, another eateth herbs: the specific dispute is almost certainly food that had passed through pagan markets or the vegetarian scruples some held to avoid it entirely, and Paul refuses to settle the practice while insisting on the mutual reception. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not, and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth, for God hath received him: contempt runs one way, judgment runs the other, and both are forbidden because the deciding fact is God's own reception of the brother in question.

Romans 14:4-6

To his own master he standeth or falleth names where accountability actually runs, vertically to Christ rather than horizontally to a fellow servant, and Paul adds his confidence that the Lord who received the weak brother is also able to make him stand. One man esteemeth one day above another, another esteemeth every day alike: the second dispute concerns the observance of special days, likely the Jewish calendar's sabbaths and feasts, and Paul again declines to rule which practice is correct. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind states the rule for the practice itself, a settled conviction rightly formed and held, while whichever way a man eats or observes he does it unto the Lord and gives God thanks, the true test being not the outward act but its direction toward Christ.

Romans 14:7-9

For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself: Paul widens the food and calendar dispute into the whole shape of the Christian life, since neither living nor dying belongs to the believer as his own private property. Whether we live, we live unto the Lord, and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: the totalizing claim covers every disputed practice named in the chapter, because the believer's whole existence, not merely his diet, belongs to Christ. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living: the lordship Paul has just claimed rests on the death and resurrection already accomplished, Christ's authority over both the living and the dead purchased at the cross and the empty tomb.

Romans 14:10-12

Why dost thou judge thy brother, or why dost thou set at nought thy brother, names the two failures of verse 3, judging and despising, and Paul answers both with the same coming reality, a personal accounting each believer will give for himself rather than for his brother's practice. For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ borrows Isaiah's every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God, a text whose larger horizon in Isaiah 45:23 and again in Philippians 2:10-11 reaches every creature though Paul applies it here to believers. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God: the judgment seat, bema, is the same tribunal named again at 2 Corinthians 5:10, a reckoning of works rather than of final salvation, a distinction the bench guards carefully against any reading that would put the believer's standing with God back on trial.

Romans 14:13-15

Let us not therefore judge one another any more, but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way: Paul redirects judgment from the brother's practice to one's own effect on the brother, the only judgment the chapter actually authorizes. I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself, but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean: Paul states his own conviction plainly, siding doctrinally with the strong, while the weak brother's conscience still binds him because he has not yet been persuaded. But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably; destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died: the strong believer's correct doctrine becomes sin the moment it is exercised in a way that wounds a brother Christ died for, the value of that brother measured by the cross rather than by the dispute.

Romans 14:16-18

Let not then your good be evil spoken of: the strong believer's liberty, good in itself, must not be exercised so carelessly that it earns the gospel a bad name among the watching weak. For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost: Paul names the true substance of the kingdom against both parties' fixation on food, and the joy named here stands as the Spirit's own present gift to the church, not a future promise only. He that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men: righteousness, peace and joy rightly ordered toward Christ answer both the divine and the human court at once.

Romans 14:19-21

Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another: Paul turns the chapter's argument into active pursuit, peace and edification named as goals the church chases rather than accidents it hopes for. For meat destroy not the work of God: the work of God is the brother himself, and Paul repeats the destroy language of verse 15 to press how seriously careless liberty can undo what grace has built. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak: Paul does not forbid meat or wine as such, since he has already called them clean in themselves, but voluntarily forgoes them for a brother's sake, love choosing a restraint that law does not require.

Romans 14:22-23

Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God: Paul closes with counsel to the strong believer, a settled conviction rightly held need not be paraded before a weaker conscience it will only trouble. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth: the freedom to enjoy a practice without self-accusation is itself named a happiness, and the chapter's final principle states the rule for every disputed practice at once, whatsoever is not of faith is sin. He that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: the word rendered damned, katakekritai, means condemned rather than eternally lost, the man's own hesitant conscience convicting him for acting past what he actually believes God allows.
