The great history-psalm of Asaph: 'I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old' (Matthew 13:35). Told so 'the generation to come' might set their hope in God, and not be as their fathers, a stubborn generation. Manna, 'the bread of the mighty,' rained upon them; yet they tempted God in their heart and 'limited the Holy One of Israel.' Plagues on Egypt retold; Shiloh forsaken; the ark captive. Then the sovereign turn: he chose Judah, Mount Zion, and 'David his servant… So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart.'
