Job 2:1-3

The second court scene repeats chapter 1's formula almost word for word, sons of God, Satan among them, and the Lord's own question about his servant Job. The added clause still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause is God's own verdict on the first round, spoken before Job has any idea a round was fought. Henry reads without cause as the chapter's quiet answer to the whole ordeal in advance: whatever explanation the friends will later invent, the text has already ruled that none of it was deserved.

Job 2:4-6

Skin for skin: Skin for skin is a sole occurrence in Scripture, and the readings on the proverb divide: Gill and Clarke read it as a bartering saying, a man will trade one skin for another to save the more valuable one, so Job's endurance so far has cost him nothing that touched his own body. Others read it as mockery of the sacrifices Job offered in chapter 1, skins given for skins, a religion still paid for out of comfort. The permission that follows is bounded exactly as before, he is in thine hand, but save his life, so the accuser again works inside a line he did not draw himself.

Job 2:7-8

The text gives sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown and offers no diagnosis; any modern identification of the disease is the bench's own guess dressed as exegesis, and Barnes names it as guesswork rather than settled fact. Job's answer is to sit among the ashes and scrape himself with a potsherd, the posture of a mourner rather than a patient, as Delitzsch notes, the ash heap becoming both his sickbed and his mourning ground at once. The completeness of the affliction, head to foot, matches the completeness God claimed for him in 1:8 and 2:3, the test now reaching the whole man.

Job 2:9-10

Curse God, and die divides the bench sharply: Augustine's line, read her as the tempter's own instrument, a helper turned adversary, sets one tradition; gentler readings hear a grief so total it has run out of any other words, a wife who has lost everything Job has lost and has no ash heap of her own to sit on. Job's answer names her as speaking like one of the foolish women, a rebuke without the cursing Satan predicted, and shall we not receive evil turns the wager's terms into a settled principle rather than a private resolve. In all this did not Job sin with his lips closes the round exactly as 1:22 closed the first.

Job 2:11-13

Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite arrive by appointment, and Eliphaz carries a town name from Edom itself, the same region the book's opening verse already placed Job in. The friends weep, tear their mantles and sit with him on the ground seven days and seven nights without a word, and Henry and Clarke both call this silent week the best comfort the three men give him in the whole book, everything spoken after it undoing the good the silence did. None spake a word unto him, for they saw that his grief was very great is the last verse before the debate opens, and the debate is worse than the silence it breaks.
