James 3:1

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation warns against seeking the teacher's seat too casually, didaskalos, the office James himself held among the Jerusalem believers. The greater condemnation follows because a teacher's words carry a teacher's accountability, the same principle the Lord attached to those who cause a little one to stumble. The warning is pastoral rather than a ban on teaching itself, since the letter's own voice is a teacher's voice throughout.

James 3:2

For in many things we offend all admits universal failure before any particular sin is named, James numbering himself among the offenders with we rather than ye. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man measures maturity by the tongue specifically, the hardest member to govern. Able also to bridle the whole body sets up the chapter's own governing image, the tongue as the body's rudder before the rudder is even named.

James 3:3-4

Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us draws the first picture, a small piece of metal turning a large and powerful animal. The ships carry the same lesson at greater scale, driven of fierce winds, yet turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Both figures make the same point before the tongue is even named again, that a small controlling instrument governs a disproportionately large body.

James 3:5-6

Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things applies the bit and the helm directly, small in size and vast in effect, how great a matter a little fire kindleth. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity names the tongue's danger at its full height, one member capable of containing a whole world of wrong. It defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature, trochos geneseos, the whole wheel of existence, and it is set on fire of hell, the tongue's worst fuel traced to its true source.

James 3:7-8

For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind surveys man's dominion over creation, Genesis 1's mandate still standing after the fall. But the tongue can no man tame draws the contrast sharply, the one creature within man's own head resisting the dominion he holds over every creature outside it. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison, the serpent's own venom borrowed as the last word on what the untamed tongue carries.

James 3:9-10

Therewith bless we God, even the Father, and therewith curse we men names the tongue's contradiction plainly, the same organ used for both. Men are made after the similitude of God, so cursing a man strikes at the image the blessing just honored in its maker. My brethren, these things ought not so to be closes the point without argument, the inconsistency left to convict on its own.

James 3:11-12

Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter turns from the body's members to nature itself, a single source expected to produce one kind of water only. The fig tree, the vine, and the fountain each keep to their own kind, a fig tree bearing olive berries as unthinkable as salt water turning fresh. Nature's consistency is the standard the double-tongued believer of verses 9 and 10 fails to meet, blessing and cursing from a source that should yield only one.

James 3:13

Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you turns the question from the tongue's danger to wisdom's true test. Let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom answers it, wisdom proven by conduct rather than claimed by profession, the same doer thread chapter 1 already set down. Meekness, not eloquence, is named as wisdom's own manner.

James 3:14-16

But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth names a wisdom that masquerades as the real thing while contradicting it. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish, three sources named in ascending danger, this world, the fallen nature, and demonic influence behind both. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work, disorder and evil traced back to the same false wisdom rather than to circumstance.

James 3:17-18

But the wisdom that is from above answers the earthly wisdom of verse 15 directly, the true wisdom listed in a chain, first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. Purity leads the list because it governs the rest, a wisdom that must be clean before it can be peaceable. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace closes the chapter, righteousness pictured as a harvest planted by peacemakers rather than seized by the strife just condemned.
