Isaiah 55:1-2

without money and without price: The invitation opens to everyone who thirsts, without regard to ability to pay, wine and milk offered without money and without price, an economy of grace set against ordinary commerce. Verse 2 asks why the hearers spend money for what is not bread and labor for what does not satisfy, turning the figure toward misplaced effort rather than mere poverty. The command to hearken diligently and eat what is good carries forward the same free offer the servant's exaltation opened in chapter 52, applied now to everyone who will come.

Isaiah 55:3-5

sure mercies of David: Incline your ear and come unto me promises an everlasting covenant built on the sure mercies of David, the phrase Paul quotes at Acts 13:34 of Christ's resurrection as the fulfillment of the promise made to David's line. Verse 4 recalls David himself as a witness and leader given to the peoples, and verse 5 widens the promise to a nation Israel did not know, nations running to Zion because the Lord has glorified her. The older commentators read the shift from David the king to a coming son of David as the covenant's own natural expansion, without settling every detail of how the two are joined.

Isaiah 55:6-7

while he may be found: Seek ye the Lord while he may be found sets a window on the offer rather than treating it as open without limit, and call ye upon him while he is near presses the same urgency. Verse 7 names what seeking requires: the wicked forsaking his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts, repentance named specifically rather than left vague. The promise answering it, that the Lord will abundantly pardon, is read by the commentators as the whole invitation's guarantee, that no one who actually turns is refused.

Isaiah 55:8-9

not your thoughts: My thoughts are not your thoughts sets the whole comfort book's confidence in God's word on a difference too wide to measure, the heavens above the earth being the figure verse 9 supplies for how far the Lord's ways and thoughts exceed the hearer's own. The verse follows directly on the promise of abundant pardon in verse 7, answering any doubt that such mercy could really be meant with a claim about the scale of the mind offering it. The commentators note the verse is stated as comfort here, not as a rebuke, addressed to those already invited to seek rather than to the merely curious.

Isaiah 55:10-11

rain cometh down: The rain and snow that come down and do not return without watering the earth and giving seed to the sower become the figure for the word that goes out of God's mouth in verse 11, which likewise will not return void but will accomplish what he pleases. The comparison ties agricultural certainty, that rain reliably produces bread, to the certainty of a spoken promise reliably producing its effect. The older writers read the verse as covering the whole book's prophecies, the specific promises about Cyrus and the servant included, as words already guaranteed to land.

Isaiah 55:12-13

go out with joy: Going out with joy and being led forth with peace pictures a second exodus without the haste of the first, and the mountains, hills, and trees are said to respond with singing and clapping, creation itself joining the celebration. Verse 13 replaces the thorn with the fir tree and the brier with the myrtle, small plants standing for the whole reversal the chapter promises. The last line calls this an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off, closing the invitation that opened the chapter with a permanence matching the covenant sworn in chapter 54.
