Esther 8:1-2

The chapter opens where the reversal thread the book has been building since 6:1 completes on the property line: the house of the Jews' enemy passes to Esther, and the ring Ahasuerus once gave Haman at 3:10 passes to Mordecai. The last clause of v1, for Esther had told what he was unto her, finally discloses the secret Mordecai charged her to keep at 2:10 and 2:20, safe to tell now that Haman is dead. Property and rank change hands in two verses, but nothing yet has been said about the decree that still stands against every Jew in the empire.

Esther 8:3-6

Esther returns to the king a second time in this chapter and her posture has changed: not the composed approach of 5:1-2 but falling at his feet and pleading with tears, because Haman's death removed the man but left his device standing. Her petition names it as Haman's device against the Jews and asks that the letters devised by him be reversed, showing that the gallows of 7:10 answered the plotter without touching the plot. The two questions of v6, how can I endure to see the evil, how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred, restate the resolve of 4:16 in the language of grief rather than risk.

Esther 8:7

The king's answer to Esther and Mordecai together recounts what has already been done, the house given, the man hanged, because he laid his hand upon the Jews, before he turns to what remains undone. Ahasuerus speaks of the matter as though it were settled, even though the decree of 3:12-13 has not been touched, a king content with his own resolution while the empire's Jews still live under a dated sentence. The gap between the king's sense of resolution and the law's continuing force sets up the legal problem the next verse names outright.

Esther 8:8

The king states the rule of Persian law plainly: a writing sealed with the king's ring may no man reverse, so Esther's plea to reverse the letters at v5 cannot be granted as asked. Ahasuerus instead authorizes a second decree in his own name and seal, and several of the older writers, Matthew Henry among them, read what follows as gospel-shaped: a sentence already passed is not repealed but overmatched, answered rather than erased by a mightier decree issued in the king's own authority. That reading is named as their tradition, not the text's own claim; what the text itself gives is a petition denied on its own terms and answered by a different instrument entirely.

Esther 8:9-10

The counter-decree is drawn up in the third month, Sivan, on its twenty-third day, roughly seventy days after Haman's decree went out in the first month at 3:12, leaving the Jews some eight months' warning before the thirteenth of Adar arrives. The scribes write to the same hundred twenty and seven provinces in the same many languages Haman's decree used, and the letters travel the same royal courier system, posts on horseback and riders on mules, camels, and young dromedaries, a detail of the Persian relay system the commentators note as fact rather than ornament. The machinery Haman built for destruction now carries the opposite message over the identical roads.

Esther 8:11-14

The decree's terms are given in the same destroying vocabulary Haman used at 3:13, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, but the target and the agent are reversed: the Jews are granted the right to stand for their life against any power that would assault them. The permission to take the spoil of them for a prey is granted here in the decree's own words, which makes the refusal of that very spoil, repeated three times in chapter 9, a chosen restraint rather than an oversight. The day fixed is the day Haman's own lot had already set, the thirteenth of the twelfth month, the month Adar, so the counter-decree meets the old date rather than picking a new one.

Esther 8:15

Mordecai leaves the king's presence in royal apparel of blue and white, a great crown of gold, and fine linen and purple, at the same gate where he once stood in sackcloth and was refused entry because none might come within the king's gate clothed with sackcloth at 4:2. The city of Shushan itself rejoiced and was glad, a direct reversal of 3:15, where the city Shushan was perplexed at the very decree now overturned. The reversal thread that has run through rings, houses, and gallows now dresses itself in cloth and color.

Esther 8:16-17

The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honour, a sentence the Targum and later Jewish tradition read as four gifts named for four things, Torah, feast, circumcision, and the phylacteries, a reading named here as the tradition it is rather than the verse's plain sense. Verse 17 widens the same joy outward into every province the decree reached, and closes on the book's widest-open clause, many of the people of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews fell upon them. The readings on that clause are named without a verdict: some hold it describes genuine converts entering the covenant, others read it as prudence in a fearful hour, and the text itself states only the fact and the reason given.
