1 Corinthians 3:1-3

Paul turns the wisdom argument onto the Corinthians themselves, unable to address them as spiritual, but as carnal, even as babes in Christ, a rebuke that follows directly from chapter two's natural man and spiritual man. He fed them with milk, and not with meat, because they were not yet able to bear solid teaching, and are not able even now, a diagnosis rather than a permanent sentence. Verse three names the proof, envying, and strife, and divisions among them, and asks whether that does not make them carnal, walking as mere men rather than as those who have the mind of Christ just claimed for them in the chapter before.

1 Corinthians 3:4

The party slogans from chapter one resurface as exhibit one for the carnality just charged, one saith, I am of Paul, and another, I am of Apollos, are ye not carnal. The repetition shows the division has not been settled by chapter one's rebuke alone, and Paul must now attack the false view of ministry underneath the slogans rather than the slogans themselves. The bench reads the return to this specific complaint as proof the letter's argument builds rather than merely restates.

1 Corinthians 3:5-7

Paul answers his own rhetorical question by demoting both party heads to their true rank, ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man, servants rather than rival masters. I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase states the true division of labor, planting and watering both necessary yet neither one decisive, since verse seven concludes neither he that planteth is any thing, neither he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase. The bench notes Paul includes himself in the demotion, refusing to exempt his own founding role from the same verdict he applies to Apollos.

1 Corinthians 3:8

Paul draws the practical conclusion from the illustration, the planter and the waterer are one in purpose even though their tasks differ, and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour, not according to how his work compares with another's. The bench reads the verse as removing the ground for ranking one minister's gift above another's, since reward is measured against a man's own labor, not against a rival's harvest. The teaching anticipates the body of many members in chapter twelve, each part valued for its own function rather than compared against the rest.

1 Corinthians 3:9

Paul names the true partnership, laborers together with God, not competitors for credit, and gives the Corinthians two images at once, ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building, agricultural and architectural, both pointing to the same congregation as God's own possession and project. The double image marks the hinge into the builder illustration that follows through verse fifteen. The bench notes the church's dignity rests entirely on whose field and whose building it is, not on which laborer worked it.

1 Corinthians 3:10-11

Paul now describes his own apostolic role as a wise masterbuilder who laid the foundation, crediting the grace of God given him rather than his own skill, and warns every man that builds on it to take heed how he builds. Verse eleven states the single limit on what any builder may lay, other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ, a foundation already fixed and beyond substitution. The bench reads the warning as addressed to teachers at Corinth building on Paul's foundation, Apollos and others included, rather than to the congregation's ordinary members.

1 Corinthians 3:12-15

The building materials, gold, silver, precious stones against wood, hay, stubble, represent the quality of a teacher's work on Christ's foundation, and every man's work shall be made manifest on the day that reveals it by fire, testing each man's work of what sort it is. If the work abides he receives a reward, if it is burned he suffers loss, yet he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire, the builder's own salvation kept distinct from the fate of his work. The bench holds the fire here as a test of ministry and doctrine at Christ's judgment seat, not a purifying of the person, since the text saves the man while burning only what he built.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17

Paul widens the building image from the ministry just discussed to the whole congregation, know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you, a corporate temple rather than the individual body in view later in the letter. The warning that follows is severe in proportion, if any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy, for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are, the party divisions of this very chapter being one form such defilement takes. The bench reads the warning as aimed at those who fracture the church's unity, the temple's holiness bound up with its being one building rather than rival factions.

1 Corinthians 3:18-20

Paul closes the wisdom argument that has run since chapter one with a direct command, let no man deceive himself, and a paradox that summarizes the whole letter's teaching on wisdom, if any man seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise, worldly wisdom surrendered as the path to God's own. Two citations complete the it-is-written ledger for these chapters, Job 5:13, he taketh the wise in their own craftiness, and Psalm 94:11, the Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain, both texts turning human cleverness against itself. The bench notes both quotations were originally aimed at the wise of Israel's own day, Paul applying settled Old Testament judgment to Corinth's admired sophists without needing to argue the point further.

1 Corinthians 3:21-23

The chapter's final command answers its opening problem directly, let no man glory in men, since the party names that divided Corinth were never worth the boasting spent on them. For all things are yours, Paul writes, listing Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, things present, things to come, all are yours, every party leader and every circumstance turned from a rival claim on loyalty into a servant of the believer's own inheritance. Verse twenty-three grounds the whole reversal in one line of descent, and ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's, the believer's true possession running upward rather than sideways into faction.
