1 Corinthians 10:1-2

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea: Paul turns from his own example in chapter 9 to Israel's, addressing Gentile believers as heirs of the fathers by faith, the same grafting Romans 11 will describe at length. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea: the pillar of cloud, the divine presence guiding and shading Israel in Exodus 13:21, and the Red Sea crossing together form a type of baptism, the whole nation identified with its deliverer as believers are identified with Christ. The bench reads the fourfold all of these two verses as deliberate, every one of that generation shared the same privileges before the same generation fell.

1 Corinthians 10:3-4

And did all eat the same spiritual meat; and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: manna in Exodus 16 and water from the rock in Exodus 17 and Numbers 20 are called spiritual because each typified Christ, the true bread and living water. And that Rock was Christ: Paul states the typology outright rather than leaving it to inference, an explicit New Testament identification rather than a mere reader's suggestion. The bench notes a Jewish tradition of a rock physically accompanying Israel through the wilderness, language Paul's readers would recognize, but the apostle's own point is theological rather than a claim about geology, the rock's provision following the people as Christ's provision follows his own.

1 Corinthians 10:5-6

But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness: privilege did not guarantee arrival, and Paul lets the plain fact stand, a whole generation baptized, fed, and given drink still died short of the promised land. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted: examples is typoi, the same word that gives typology its name, the wilderness generation set forward as a pattern meant to be read forward into the church's own life. The bench presses the warning against every Corinthian confidence that sacraments received guarantee safety regardless of conduct, the very confidence chapter 10 as a whole is written to correct.

1 Corinthians 10:7

Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play: the citation is Exodus 32:6, keep-hard on the letter's it-is-written ledger, describing the feast Israel held before the golden calf. Play, paizo, is a broad word covering both revelry and the sexual license ancient and modern interpreters alike have read into the scene, so the citation carries both idolatry and immorality in a single verse, the two sins the next two verses will separate. The bench connects the calf's feast directly to the idol banquets at Corinth's pagan temples, the same combination of ritual meal and license the church had been asked to consider in chapter 8.

1 Corinthians 10:8

Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand: the event is Baal-peor, Numbers 25, where Israel's men joined Moabite women in idolatrous sexual rites, and the plague that followed is Scripture's clearest picture of the two sins traveling together. Numbers 25:9 gives the total dead in the plague as twenty-four thousand, while Paul's twenty-three thousand fell in one day, the single day's count inside the larger total, and the bench treats the two figures as complementary rather than conflicting. The number itself is secondary to the point, that the very sin Corinth was tempted toward at pagan feasts had already destroyed thousands under the old covenant.

1 Corinthians 10:9

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents: the event is Numbers 21, Israel's complaint against God and Moses met with fiery serpents, and Paul names the one tempted as Christ, the same identification made explicit for the rock in verse 4. The bench reads tempt here as testing God's patience by open complaint against his provision, precisely the temptation a church restless under apostolic restriction could repeat. The serpent judgment answered by the bronze serpent lifted up, John 3:14's own type, stands unstated behind the warning but consistent with how the letter has already used Israel's history typologically.

1 Corinthians 10:10

Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer: the reference most likely gathers Korah's rebellion and the plague of Numbers 16, where a destroying angel executed judgment on the congregation's complaint against Moses and Aaron. The destroyer, ho olothreutes, recalls the destroying angel of the Passover night in Exodus 12, the same title applied to a later act of judgment on the same nation. The bench closes the list of five wilderness sins, lust, idolatry, fornication, tempting Christ, and murmuring, each answered in its own generation by a distinct judgment, the pattern the next verses will name explicitly as written for later readers.

1 Corinthians 10:11-13

Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come: Paul states the hermeneutic governing the whole passage, the wilderness history preserved in Scripture with a forward-facing purpose reaching the church's own generation. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall: confidence itself becomes the danger the warning targets, aimed precisely at any Corinthian who counted his knowledge or his freedom a guarantee against falling. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it: the promise balances the warning, no trial beyond human bearing and no trial without God's own provided way out, a verse the bench calls among the most quoted comforts in the whole letter.

1 Corinthians 10:14-15

flee from idolatry: Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry: the whole wilderness argument lands in one command, flee rather than merely avoid, the same verb Paul will use elsewhere for fornication, treating idolatry as a danger to be run from rather than reasoned with at close range. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say: Paul appeals to the Corinthians' own prized wisdom, the very quality chapter 1 warned against trusting apart from the cross, now enlisted to judge his argument on its merits. The bench notes the shift in tone, from warning to invitation, as Paul turns to lay before them the positive case for why the Lord's table and the idol's table cannot be shared.

1 Corinthians 10:16-17

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?: koinonia, communion, names a real participation, not a bare memorial, the meal joining the church to what Christ's body and blood accomplished. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread: the letter's body thread surfaces again, unity argued from a single loaf shared by many, the same figure that will govern the discernment of the body at 11:29. The bench reads verses 16-17 as Paul's positive foundation before the negative argument against idol feasts that follows, the Lord's table defined before it is defended.

1 Corinthians 10:18-20

Behold Israel after the flesh, are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar: the Levitical system supplies Paul's parallel, eating the sacrifice joined the worshiper to the altar and its meaning, whether the altar served the true God or, as the next verses show, a false one. Paul asks whether an idol or its sacrifice is anything at all, and answers that the things the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God. An idol has no real existence as a god, yet the worship offered before it reaches a real spiritual power, and the site reads Paul's devils, daimonia, at face value, unseen beings using dead images as a point of contact with their worshipers. I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils names the danger plainly, participation in the feast being participation with what stands behind it, not a neutral act toward an empty statue.

1 Corinthians 10:21-22

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils: the impossibility is moral rather than physical, a believer can attend both feasts but cannot belong genuinely to both, the exclusive claim following directly from the real fellowship each table confers. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?: the language of jealousy recalls the Decalogue's own description of God regarding rival worship, and the rhetorical question exposes the folly of testing that jealousy while claiming his protection. The bench treats this as the argument's climax, the idol-meat question no longer a matter of private conscience alone once actual participation in temple feasts is in view, distinct from the marketplace meat the next section will address.

1 Corinthians 10:23-24

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not: Paul repeats his own earlier maxim from 6:12, correcting a Corinthian slogan by pairing lawful with two better tests, benefit and building up, neither of which the bare word lawful supplies. Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth: the principle that will govern the rest of the chapter is stated as a rule of love, the same rule chapter 13 will expound at length, seeking the other's good before one's own right. The bench reads the shift here from feast-fellowship, forbidden outright, to everyday meals, governed by love rather than by blanket prohibition.

1 Corinthians 10:25-27

Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: the citation is Psalm 24:1, and the principle frees ordinary market meat from suspicion regardless of its history in a pagan temple, since the whole created order belongs to God rather than to any idol. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake: the same freedom extends to a private meal in an unbeliever's home, ordinary hospitality distinguished sharply from the temple feasts just forbidden. The bench notes the deliberate contrast Paul draws between a social meal, where the meat's origin is incidental, and a religious feast, where eating is itself an act of worship.

1 Corinthians 10:28-30

But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: once the meat's history is announced, the same freedom is voluntarily laid down for the sake of the one who spoke, the weaker-brother principle of chapter 8 applied to a concrete case. Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?: Paul clarifies that his own conscience remains free even while his conduct yields, the abstention being love's choice rather than a change in what is actually lawful. For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?: the closing question keeps thanksgiving as the true measure of clean eating, echoing 1 Timothy 4:4's later statement of the same principle.

1 Corinthians 10:31-33

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God: the whole section, running from meat markets to private meals, is gathered under a single rule broad enough to govern every ordinary act of life, not idol meat alone. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: the three groups cover every hearer Paul might meet, and the principle of chapter 9's missionary flexibility returns here as the reason for the restraint just urged. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved: Paul offers his own conduct as the pattern, closing the idol-meat discussion begun at chapter 8 on the same note it opened, love outranking knowledge and rights alike.
