1 Chronicles 13:1-3

David's first act as reigning king in Chronicles is not a war but the ark, placed before the battles of chapter 14 and its palace building, the worship-first shape of the whole book. He consults the captains of thousands and hundreds and then the whole congregation of Israel, a national deliberation wider than Samuel's account, which simply reports David gathering thirty thousand chosen men. Verse 3's confession, that Israel enquired not at the ark in the days of Saul, reaches back to the verdict Chronicles already stated on Saul at 10:13-14: he died for asking counsel of a familiar spirit and not enquiring of the LORD. David's first move corrects exactly that failure.

1 Chronicles 13:4-6

The whole congregation agrees without dissent, and David summons Israel from Shihor of Egypt to the entering of Hemath, the nation's outer borders named to mark this as an all-Israel undertaking rather than a local errand. The ark had rested at Kirjath-jearim, also called Baalah, since the men of that town received it back from the Philistines a generation earlier. Verse 6 names it fully, the ark of God the LORD that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it, the throne title the Law itself gives it at Exodus 25:22.

The cart is itself the error, though nothing in this verse says so. The Law required the ark carried on staves by Levites, on pain of death if even touched, Numbers 4:15 and Exodus 25:14, and a cart drawn by oxen was Philistine practice, the very method Philistine priests used to send the ark home in 1 Samuel 6:7. Chronicles tells this exactly as 2 Samuel 6:3-4 does; the explicit doctrine, that none ought to carry the ark but the Levites, waits for 15:2. Abinadab's house had kept the ark for years, and Uzza and Ahio were his sons.

1 Chronicles 13:8

Every instrument Israel owns sounds at once, singing, harps, psalteries, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets, the same list of instruments that will organize the Levitical choirs David founds in chapters 15 and 16. Genuine worship and a real breach of the Law travel together in this one procession, and the chapter does not resolve the tension before Uzza's hand reaches for the ark two verses later. Spurgeon preached this scene as The Lesson of Uzza, reading the zeal of the players as no substitute for the obedience the Law required.

1 Chronicles 13:9-11

Uzza's hand moves by instinct, to steady the ark when the oxen stumble, not to seize it, and the Law's penalty falls anyway: the ark's holiness did not depend on his motive. Chronicles names the site Chidon where 2 Samuel 6:6 names it Nachon, a variant the commentators treat as two names for one threshingfloor rather than two separate events. David's anger and fear stand recorded without excuse, and the place is called Perez-uzza, the breach of Uzza, a name David himself uses again at 15:13 to confess that the LORD made a breach upon us for seeking him not after the due order.

1 Chronicles 13:12-14

David's courage turns to fear, and the ark stops three months short of Jerusalem, turned aside into the house of Obed-edom, called here the Gittite for the Philistine town of Gath. Later chapters identify him as a Levite and a gatekeeper, 15:18, 24 and 16:38, so the household that receives the ark next is not the stranger the title first suggests. The LORD blesses that house and everything in it, and the blessing becomes David's proof that the ark itself was never the danger, only the manner of carrying it.
