a day for you to sound the trumpets

on Numbers 29:1-6

Leviticus 23:24 names this day but leaves its offerings unnamed. Numbers supplies them, and verse 6 stacks three offerings on the one day: those given here, the monthly offering of Numbers 28:11-15, and the regular daily offering. Neither book says what the trumpets are for, and later Jewish reckoning keeps this day as the new year, while Exodus 12:2 sets the first month in spring.

one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs

John Gill notes that this burnt offering matches the offerings for the new moon, the days of unleavened bread and the day of firstfruits, with one bull fewer. The same set returns on the tenth day and on the eighth day of the feast. It is the month's standard offering. Only the seven days of tabernacles depart from it.
