On the fifteenth day of the seventh month

on Numbers 29:12-16

The Feast of Tabernacles opens with thirteen young bulls, the largest offering in the calendar. The bulls then fall by one each day to seven, while the rams hold at two and the lambs at fourteen.

Jamieson, Fausset & Brown give two reasons for the size of this offering. The feast fell at the year's end and might supply past deficiencies, and it followed the ingathering and called for liberal thanks. John Calvin calls it the chief festival, which recalled the forty years in the desert.

on the fifteenth day--was to be held the feast of booths or tabernacles. The feast was to last seven days, the first and last of which were to be kept as Sabbaths, and a particular offering was prescribed for each day, the details of which are given with a minuteness suited to the infant state of the church.
