On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly--The feast of tabernacles was brought to a close on the eighth day, which was the great day (Joh 7:37).

The eighth day stands outside the seven as "a solemn assembly". John 7:37 places Jesus' cry "On the last and greatest day of the feast", which readers take as either the seventh day or this eighth.

Matthew Henry notes that the last day received one bull, one ram and seven lambs, half the rams and lambs of each day before it. Adam Clarke says the Jews still counted it the chief day of the feast.

Commentary On Chapter XXIX 6. Of the month - Belonging to every new moon. Afflict your souls - Yourselves, by fasting and abstinence from all delightful things, and by compunction for your sins, and the judgments of God, either deserved by you or inflicted upon you.
But ye shall offer a burnt offering,.... Which was the same that was offered on the first and tenth days of this month, Num 29:2 and the meat and drink offerings for each of the creatures were the same, as often expressed; and on this day a goat for a sin offering was also offered, besides the daily sacrifice, and what went along with that.
