they set out on a three-day journey from the mountain
on Numbers 10:33-34
For three days after leaving the mountain the ark travels ahead “to seek a resting place for them”, while Numbers 2:17 and verse 21 put it in the middle of the column. Barnes marks the difference, and both statements stand in the same chapter. The cloud is over them by day, as at Exodus 13:21, and Numbers 9 had made it the rule for every move.

John Wesley supplies by night as well, from the pattern Numbers 9:16 describes, and he tells readers to fill out one passage from another. He adds that the cloud stayed over the ark whether it stood or moved. The ark and the cloud made one sign of God's presence.
