on Jeremiah 3:19-21
The Lord's own words picture him weighing the adoption, how shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations, wondering aloud whether the gift will be honored. The hoped answer, thou shalt call me, My father, and shalt not turn away from me, is met instead by the old comparison, as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me. A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel, closes the unit with the very repentance God had asked for, though it comes only after the charge of treachery has been laid in full.

As an adulterous wife elopes from her husband, so have they gone a whoring from God. They were joined to God by a marriage-covenant, but they broke that covenant, they dealt treacherously with God, who had always dealt kindly and faithfully with them. Treacherous dealing with men like ourselves is bad enough, but to deal treacherously with God is to deal treasonably.
