The oracle turns to restoration, at the end of forty years, gathered to Pathros, upper Egypt where the nation had begun. The return is modest, the basest of the kingdoms. The purpose is stated for Israel's benefit, so that Judah is cured of the temptation to lean on this reed.

Under Thutmose III Egypt had ruled Canaan and reached the Euphrates. After the Persian conquest in 525 BC it passed to Persians, Greeks and Romans in turn. Egypt, once a ruler over nations, became the lowliest of kingdoms.
