The altar rule is the one at Exodus 20:25, uncut stones with no iron tool, since a tool used on the stone defiles it. Joshua 8:30-31 records this altar on Ebal.

Henry reads the peace offerings eaten at the altar as Israel's consent to the covenant, since parties to a covenant sealed it by eating together. Jacob and Laban ate at their heap of stones at Genesis 31:46 in the same way. Israel ate before the LORD as His tenants.
